I have read this book 2 or 3 times before. But that was a long time ago. And I was not knowledgeable enough then to understand the intricacies involved in it. But this time it was a complete read, not only because my reading style has developed over time, but also because of the exhaustive notes provided by Alfred appel, jr., without which a complete understanding of a book as this involving so much allusions, puns and parodies would be hard, if not impossible. The comical style of narration turns even the most gloomy situations in the novel hilarious.

I cannot forget the chapter in which humbert humbert goes to kill quilty. I felt real sympathy for quilty, who until then was the villainous, evil and ugly character of the story, thanks to the humorous style of handling the situation by the author.

I was eagerly waiting for the scene where humbert humbert goes to the residence of Lolita and shoots at her only to find that instead of bullets piercing her body they drip down one by one slowly as drops of water do from an improperly closed faucet. This picture has been there for years in my mind after reading the book long ago. But this time, I couldn’t find such a scene in the book. And this is not an abridged version. Was I careless at some points this time? Or was it just a dream influenced by the book and recorded in my memory after reading it earlier? Or was it a mistake in translation? (I read this book at least once in Malayalam translation). I don’t know.

മുമ്പ്‌ ഞാന്‍ ഈ പുസ്തകം വായിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്‌, 2-3 പ്രാവശ്യം. പക്ഷേ അത്‌ കുറേ വര്‍ഷങ്ങള്‍ക്കു മുന്‍പായിരുന്നു. അന്ന് അതില്‍ അടങ്ങിയിരുന്ന കുറേയധികം കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ മനസ്സിലാക്കാനുള്ള അറിവ്‌ എനിക്കുണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല. പക്ഷേ ഇത്തവണ ഇത്‌ ഒരു പൂര്‍ണ്ണവായനയായിരുന്നു. വര്‍ഷങ്ങള്‍ കൊണ്ട്‌ എന്റെ വായനാരീതി പുരോഗമിച്ചതുകൊണ്ടു മാത്രമല്ല അത്‌, അതിലുപരി ആല്‍ഫ്രെഡ്‌ ആപ്പെല്‍ jr.-ന്റെ വളരെ വിശദമായ കുറിപ്പുകളുടെ സഹായം മൂലമാണ്‌. അത്തരം കുറിപ്പുകളില്ലാതെ ഇതു പോലൊരു പുസ്തകം മനസ്സിലാക്കി വായിക്കുക എന്നത്‌ അസാധ്യമല്ലെങ്കിലും ദുഷ്കരമായ ഒരു കാര്യമാണ്‌. അത്രയധികം ദ്വയാര്‍ഥങ്ങളും, പാരഡികളും പുസ്തകത്തിനു പുറമേയുള്ള പലതിനെയും സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്ന പ്രയോഗങ്ങളും കൊണ്ട്‌ ഇതു നിറഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്നു. നര്‍മ്മം നിറഞ്ഞ രീതിയിലുള്ള ആഖ്യാനശൈലി കഥയിലെ ഏറ്റവും മ്ലാനമായ രംഗങ്ങളില്‍ പോലും വായനക്കാരനെ പൊട്ടിച്ചിരിപ്പിക്കുന്നു.

ഹംബര്‍ട്ട്‌ ഹംബര്‍ട്ട്‌ ക്വില്‍റ്റിയെ കൊല്ലാന്‍ പോകുന്ന രംഗം മറക്കാന്‍ കഴിയുന്നില്ല. ആ രംഗത്തില്‍ അതുവരെ വില്ലനും വൃത്തികെട്ടവനും തിന്മ നിറഞ്ഞവനും ആയ ക്വില്‍റ്റിയോട്‌ സഹതാപം തോന്നിപ്പോകുന്നു. അത്ര നര്‍മ്മരസപൂര്‍വ്വമാണു എഴുത്തുകാരന്‍ ആ രംഗം കൈകാര്യം ചെയ്തിരിക്കുന്നത്‌.
ഹംബര്‍ട്ട്‌ ഹംബര്‍ട്ട്‌ ലോലിതയുടെ വീട്ടില്‍ പോയി അവളെ വെടിവെക്കുകയും വെടിയുണ്ടകള്‍ അവളുടെ ശരീരം തുളക്കുന്നതിനു പകരം ശരിക്കടക്കാത്ത ഒരു പൈപ്പില്‍ നിന്നു വെള്ളം തുള്ളി തുള്ളിയായി വീഴുന്നതു പോലെ ഒന്നൊന്നായി താഴേക്കു പതിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്ന രംഗത്തിനു വേണ്ടി ഞാന്‍ പ്രതീക്ഷയോടെ കാത്തിരിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. വളരെ വര്‍ഷങ്ങള്‍ക്കു മുന്‍പ്‌ ഈ പുസ്തകം വായിച്ചതിനു ശേഷം ഈ രംഗം എന്റെ മനസ്സില്‍ എപ്പോഴും ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. പക്ഷെ, ഇത്തവണത്തെ വായനയില്‍ അങ്ങനെയൊരു രംഗം എനിക്കു കാണാന്‍ കഴിഞ്ഞില്ല. ഈ പതിപ്പാണെങ്കില്‍ ചുരുക്കിയ പതിപ്പല്ലതാനും. ഇപ്രാവശ്യം ചില ഭാഗങ്ങള്‍ ഞാന്‍ വളരെ അശ്രദ്ധനായി വായിച്ചുവോ? അതോ മുന്‍പ്‌ വായിച്ചതിനു ശേഷം എപ്പോഴോ ഞാന്‍ കണ്ട ഒരു സ്വപ്നമായിരുന്നോ അത്‌? അതോ തര്‍ജ്ജുമയില്‍ വന്ന പിശകോ? (ഒരു തവണയെങ്കിലും ഞാന്‍ ഈ പുസ്തകം മലയാളം തര്‍ജ്ജുമയായാണു വായിച്ചത്‌.) എനിക്കറിയില്ല.
