this was my second read of the book. i had read this thrilling book years ago as a malayalam translation. and this was the first time i read anything by agatha christie in the original. the initial pages reminded me of The five people you meet in heaven by Mitch Albom in which the protagonists are responsible for the death of someone or other indirectly, without even being aware of it the entire life. also, memories of a couple of movies came to mind. one is The flatliners in which Julia Roberts enacts a main character. it's about a group of medical students, four or five of them, performing experiments with their own bodies. they stop their heartbeats using a cardiac defibrillator for a few seconds, during which all the activities in the body stop completely and only the brain remains active -- active in a very sharp way. it brings back some flashes of long forgotten memories of the childhood or teens. it shows them vivid pictures and scenes from their past and helps them rediscover some crime they had committed as a child or some unpleasant incident they had experienced in their past, the significance or seriousness of which was incomprehensible for their innocent and immature minds back then. another movie was a hindi remake of the agatha christie's book itself. the name was, i guess, Anjaan or Benaam. but i don't remember if it was an exact remake or one with some modifications suitable for the indian cinema. i remember there were songs in it, an inevitability in a bollywood masala.

ഒരു ഒറ്റപ്പെട്ട ദ്വീപിലെ വീട്ടില്‍ ഒരുമിച്ചു കൂട്ടപ്പെട്ട പത്തു പേര്‍. കള്ള എഴുത്തുകള്‍ മുഖേന ക്ഷണിച്ചു വരുത്തപ്പെട്ടവര്‍. അവരെല്ലാം ജീവിതത്തിലെപ്പോഴോ പലരുടെയും മരണത്തിനു കാരണക്കാരായിരുന്നു. പക്ഷേ നിയമത്തിന്റെ ദൃഷ്ടിയില്‍ തെറ്റല്ലാതിരുന്നതുമൂലം അവരാരും ശിക്ഷിക്കപ്പെട്ടിട്ടുണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല. അവര്‍ക്കുള്ള ശിക്ഷ നല്‍കാനാണ്‌ അവരെ ആ ഒറ്റപ്പെട്ട ദ്വീപില്‍ ഒന്നിച്ചു കൂട്ടിയിരിക്കുന്നത്‌. അവര്‍ ഒന്നൊന്നായി നിഗൂഢമായി കൊല്ലപ്പെടുന്നു. മൂന്ന് മരണങ്ങള്‍ക്കു ശേഷം അവര്‍ക്ക്‌ ഉറപ്പായി കൊലയാളി അവരിലൊരാള്‍ തന്നെയാണെന്ന്. പക്ഷെ ആരാണയാള്‍? അതാണ്‌ ഉത്തരം കിട്ടാത്ത ചോദ്യം. അവര്‍ പരസ്പരം സംശയിക്കുന്നു. സംശയത്തിന്റെ ദൃഷ്ടി പതിയാത്തവര്‍ നിര്‍ഭാഗ്യവശാല്‍ മരണപ്പെട്ടു കഴിഞ്ഞവര്‍ മാത്രം..
ഒരു മനോഹര വായനാനുഭവം!
ഇത്‌ രണ്ടാം തവണയാണ്‌ ഞാനീ പുസ്തകം വായിക്കുന്നത്‌. വര്‍ഷങ്ങള്‍ക്കുമുന്‍പ്‌ ഇതിന്റെ മലയാളപരിഭാഷ വായിച്ചിരുന്നു. ഇതിന്റെ ആദ്യത്തെ പേജുകള്‍ മിച്ച്‌ ആല്‍ബമിന്റെ ദ്‌ ഫൈവ്‌ പീപ്‌ള്‍ യു മീറ്റ്‌ ഇന്‍ ഹെവന്‍ എന്ന പുസ്തകത്തെ ഓര്‍മിപ്പിച്ചു. അതിലെ പ്രധാന കഥാപാത്രങ്ങള്‍ മറ്റാരുടെയോ മരണത്തിന്‌ കാരണക്കാരാണ്‌, നേരിട്ടല്ലെങ്കിലും. പക്ഷേ ജീവിതത്തിലൊരിക്കലും അവരതറിയുന്നില്ല. ഈ പുസ്തകം വായിച്ചപ്പോള്‍ ഒന്നുരണ്ട്‌ സിനിമകളും ഓര്‍മ്മ വന്നു. ഒന്ന് ദ്‌ ഫ്ലാറ്റ്‌ലൈനേഴ്‌സ്‌ ആണ്‌. ജൂലിയ റോബര്‍ട്‌സ്‌ പ്രധാനകഥാപാത്രം. നാലഞ്ച്‌ മെഡിക്കല്‍ വിദ്യാര്‍ഥികള്‍ അവരുടെ സ്വന്തം ശരീരങ്ങളില്‍ പരീക്ഷണം നടത്തുന്നു. കാര്‍ഡിയാക്‌ ഡിഫിബ്രില്ലേറ്ററുപയോഗിച്ച്‌ ഹൃദയത്തെ അല്‍പനേരത്തേക്ക്‌ നിര്‍ത്തുന്നു. അതോടെ ശരീരത്തിനകത്തെ എല്ലാ പ്രക്രിയകളും നിലയ്ക്കുന്നു. തലച്ചോര്‍ മാത്രം പ്രവര്‍ത്തിക്കുന്നു, അതും അതിതീവ്രതയോടെ. വളരെ മുന്‍പു മറന്നു പോയ, കുട്ടിക്കാലത്ത്‌ നടത്തിയ കുറ്റകൃത്യങ്ങളുടെയും ചില അപ്രിയ അനുഭവങ്ങളുടെയുമൊക്കെ വ്യക്തമായ ചിത്രങ്ങള്‍ മനസ്സിലൂടെ മിന്നിമറയുന്നു. പക്വതയെത്താത്ത നിഷ്കളങ്കമനസ്സുകള്‍ ചെയ്ത തെറ്റുകളുടെ ഗൗരവം അങ്ങനെ തിരിച്ചറിയാന്‍ അവര്‍ക്ക്‌ ഒരവസരം ലഭിക്കുന്നു. ഓര്‍മ്മ വന്ന മറ്റൊരു സിനിമ അന്‍ജാന്‍ എന്നോ ബേനാം എന്നോ പേരുള്ള ഹിന്ദി സിനിമയാണ്‌. അത്‌ അഗാത ക്രിസ്റ്റിയുടെ ഈ പുസ്തകത്തിന്റെ ഒരു റീമേക്കാണ്‌. പൂര്‍ണ്ണമായും അതേ കഥയാണോ അതോ വളരെ മാറ്റങ്ങള്‍ വരുത്തിയിട്ടുള്ളതാണോ എന്ന് ഓര്‍ക്കുന്നില്ല. അതില്‍ ഗാനങ്ങളുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. ബോളിവുഡിന്‌ ഒഴിവാക്കാന്‍ പറ്റാത്ത സംഗതി.
