തന്റെ നാടായ അതിരാണപ്പാടത്തെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള ശ്രീധരന്റെ ഓര്‍മ്മക്കുറിപ്പുകളാണ്‌ ഈ പുസ്തകം. ഒരു നോവലെന്നു പറയുന്നെങ്കിലും ഇതിനെ ഒരു നോവലായി കാണാന്‍ കഴിയുന്നില്ല. ഒരു നോവലില്‍ പൊതുവെ അതിലെ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളെയും വിവരിച്ചിട്ടുള്ള സംഭവങ്ങളെയും മറ്റു കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളുമായും സംഭവങ്ങളുമായും ബന്ധിപ്പിച്ചുനിര്‍ത്തുന്ന ഒരു കട്ടിയുള്ള ചരട്‌ കാണാന്‍ പറ്റും. പക്ഷെ ആ ചരട്‌ ഇതിലില്ല. ഇതിലെ ഓരോ അദ്ധ്യായവും ഓരോ വ്യത്യസ്ത സംഭവമാണ്‌. അതിന്‌ മറ്റ്‌ അദ്ധ്യായങ്ങളുമായി ഒരു ബന്ധവുമില്ല. ഓരോ അദ്ധ്യായത്തിലെ കഥയും സ്വതന്ത്രമായി നില്‍ക്കുന്നു. ഒരു അദ്ധ്യായത്തിലെ മാറ്റങ്ങള്‍ മറ്റദ്ധ്യായങ്ങളെ കാര്യമായി സ്വാധീനിക്കുന്നില്ല. ഇതിലെ ചില അദ്ധ്യായങ്ങള്‍ അവിടെന്നും ഇവിടെന്നും എടുത്തുമാറ്റിയിട്ട്‌ ബാക്കിയുള്ളത്‌ കൂട്ടിവെച്ച്‌ ഒരു പൂര്‍ണ്ണപുസ്തകമാണെന്നും പറഞ്ഞ്‌ ആര്‍ക്കെങ്കിലും വായിക്കാന്‍ കൊടുത്താല്‍ അയാള്‍ക്ക്‌ ആ മാറ്റം തിരിച്ചറിയാന്‍ കഴിയില്ല. അതുകൊണ്ടാണ്‌ ഇതിനെ ഒരു നോവലായി കാണാന്‍ തോന്നുന്നില്ല എന്നു പറഞ്ഞത്‌. ഒരു പ്രസിദ്ധകൃതിയെക്കുറിച്ചും പ്രസിദ്ധ എഴുത്തുകാരനെക്കുറിച്ചും ഇങ്ങനെയൊക്കെ ചിന്തിക്കേണ്ടിവരുന്നല്ലോ എന്ന വിഷമവുമായി പുസ്തകത്തിന്റെ അവസാനപേജുകളോടടുത്തുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുമ്പോഴാണ്‌ ആ ചിന്തയെയെല്ലാം തട്ടിമാറ്റിക്കൊണ്ട്‌ രണ്ടദ്ധ്യായങ്ങള്‍ ഓടിയടുത്തത്‌. അവസാന അദ്ധ്യായത്തിനു തൊട്ടുമുന്‍പുള്ള രണ്ടദ്ധ്യായങ്ങള്‍. എമ്മ എന്ന ജെര്‍മ്മന്‍ പെണ്‍കുട്ടിയുടെ ഹൃദയസ്പര്‍ശിയായ കഥ. കണ്ണുകളെ ഈറനണിയിക്കുന്ന ഏതാനും താളുകള്‍. ബാക്കിയുള്ള അദ്ധ്യായങ്ങളുടെ പോരായ്മ നികത്താന്‍ അവയെക്കാളും നൂറുമടങ്ങ്‌ ഭംഗിയുള്ള ഈ രണ്ട്‌ അദ്ധ്യായങ്ങള്‍ മാത്രം മതി. സന്തോഷമായി. ആള്‍'സ്‌ വെല്‍ ദാറ്റ്‌ എന്‍ഡ്‌സ്‌ വെല്‍!

this book is a collection of memoirs of sreedharan about his land athiraanippaadam. eventhough this is categorised as a novel, it is hard to consider it a novel. in a novel, the characters and events mentioned in a chapter are tied to those of other chapters by a strong thread. but such a thread is missing in this book. each chapter in this book is a separate event or a story which is independent of other events and characters and stay alone and detached. changes in a chapter don't affect other chapters in any significant manner. would anyone remove some random chapters from the book and pass it off as a complete book, a reader will never perceive the difference. that's why i hesitate to think of it as a novel. as i was nearing the last pages of the book with the sadness triggered by such ill feelings towards a famous book and a much acclaimed writer, two great chapters came running to my rescue. the two chapters immediately preceding the final one in the book. the poignant story of the german girl emma. those few pages that wet your eyes are a hundred times fabulous than the other parts of the book. they are enough to compensate for whatever negative aspects there are in all other pages of the book. i'm glad! all's well that ends well!
