Before reading this book, The title made me think that it is about reading the much spurned book Lolita in the conservative iran. But it turned out to be not just that, but much more. The author and the several girl students who formed the clandestine book discussion group to discuss some of the forbidden classics in the revolutionary Islamic iran were relating themselves to Lolita where there was a humbert in their lives in one form or another, restricting the freedom of their lives in some way and taking control over them in a manner that was loathed by them all. The humbert could take any form ranging from the mere uncle of one of the girls who tried to molest her in her childhood to the ‘philosopher-king’ ayatollah himself who, according to the author, tried to build up his dream kingdom by imposing the strictest rules and restricting the freedom of the subjects, especially women. In a country devastated by the so called revolution and a war with the neighbouring country, the only way these women could find to live the lives of their dreams was to turn to fiction, because they felt that their lives of freedom could exist only in their imagination.

The book tries to tell us about the power of imagination and fiction. As the group of women crazy for fiction reads the fictional classics by nabokov, Fitzgerald, austen and james, we realize how their true lives are intertwined with the stories they discuss. This is part memoir and part literary criticism.

The book helped me see fiction in a way quite different from the way I used to look at it so far. It helped me discover certain very valuable aspects of fiction that used to remain hidden to me.

ഈ പുസ്തകം വായിക്കുന്നതിനു മുന്‍പ്‌ അതിന്റെ പേരു കേട്ടപ്പോള്‍ തോന്നിയത്‌ യാഥാസ്തിതിക ഇറാനില്‍ ഇരുന്നുകൊണ്ട്‌ ലോകം മുഴുവന്‍ നിരാകരിച്ച വിവാദഗ്രന്ഥമായ ലോലിത എന്ന നോവല്‍ വായിക്കുന്നതിനെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള പുസ്തകമാണെന്നായിരുന്നു. പക്ഷേ അത്‌ അതുമാത്രമായിരുന്നില്ല, അതിലപ്പുറവും പലതും ഉണ്ടെന്നു വായിച്ചു തുടങ്ങിയപ്പോള്‍ മനസ്സിലായി. എഴുത്തുകാരിയും തന്റെ വിദ്യാര്‍ത്ഥിനികളായ കുറച്ചു പെണ്‍കുട്ടികളും ഇസ്ലാമിക വിപ്ലവത്തിന്റെ ഇറാനില്‍ പ്രൊത്സാഹിപ്പിക്കപ്പെടാത്ത ചില ലോക ക്ലാസിക്കുകള്‍ ചര്‍ച്ച ചെയ്യുവാനായി തുടങ്ങിയ രഹസ്യക്കൂട്ടായ്മയില്‍ അവര്‍ അവരെത്തന്നെ ലോലിതയായി കാണുകയായിരുന്നു. കാരണം അവരുടെ സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യത്തെ നിഷേധിക്കുകയും വെറുപ്പുളവാക്കും വിധം അവരെ തന്റെ നിയന്ത്രണത്തിന്‍ കീഴിലാക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്ന ഒരു ഹംബെര്‍ട്ട്‌ അവരുടെയൊക്കെ ജീവിതത്തിലുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. ആ ഹംബെര്‍ട്ട്‌ കൂട്ടത്തിലുണ്ടായിരുന്ന ഒരു കുട്ടിയെ ചെറുപ്പത്തില്‍ ലൈംഗികമായി പീഡിപ്പിക്കാന്‍ ശ്രമിച്ച തന്റെ അമ്മാവനാകാം. അല്ലെങ്കില്‍, എഴുത്തുകാരിയുടെ തന്നെ വാക്കുകളില്‍, ഏറ്റവും കഠിനമായ നിയമങ്ങള്‍ അടിച്ചേല്‍പ്പിക്കുകയും സ്വാതന്ത്രം -- പ്രത്യേകിച്ച്‌ സ്ത്രീകളുടെ സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യം -- നിഷേധിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തുകൊണ്ട്‌ തന്റെ സ്വപ്നസാമ്രാജ്യം കെട്ടിപ്പടുക്കാന്‍ ശ്രമിച്ച 'തത്വജ്ഞാനി-രാജാവാ'യ ആയത്തുള്ള തന്നെയുമാകാം. ഇസ്‌ലാമിക വിപ്ലവവും അയല്‍രാജ്യവുമായുള്ള യുദ്ധവും കൊണ്ട്‌ താറുമാറായ രാജ്യത്ത്‌ തങ്ങള്‍ സ്വപ്നം കണ്ടിരുന്ന ജീവിതം ജീവിക്കുന്നതിനായി ആ സ്ത്രീകള്‍ കണ്ട ഒരേയൊരു മാര്‍ഗം ഫിക്ഷനിലേക്ക്‌ തിരിയുക എന്നതായിരുന്നു. കാരണം സ്വതന്ത്രമായ ജീവിതം സങ്കല്‍പത്തില്‍ മാത്രമേ കണ്ടെത്താനാകൂ എന്ന് അവര്‍ തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞു.

സങ്കല്‍പത്തിന്റെയും ഫിക്ഷന്റെയും ശക്തിയെക്കുറിച്ച്‌ നമ്മളോട്‌ പറയാന്‍ ഈ പുസ്തകം ശ്രമിക്കുന്നു. ഫിക്ഷനു വേണ്ടി മരിക്കുന്ന സ്ത്രീകള്‍ നബോകോവ്‌, ഫിറ്റ്‌സ്‌ജെറാള്‍ഡ്‌, ഓസ്റ്റെന്‍, ജെയിംസ്‌ തുടങ്ങിയവരുടെ ഫിക്ഷനല്‍ ക്ലാസ്സിക്കുകള്‍ ചര്‍ച്ച ചെയ്യുമ്പോള്‍ അവരുടെ സ്വന്തം ജീവിതകഥകള്‍ ചര്‍ച്ച ചെയ്യപ്പെടുന്ന കഥകളുമായി എങ്ങനെ കെട്ടുപിണഞ്ഞു കിടക്കുന്നു എന്ന സത്യം നമ്മള്‍ മനസ്സിലാക്കുന്നു. ഇത്‌ ഒരേസമയം ഓര്‍മ്മക്കുറിപ്പും സാഹിത്യനിരൂപണവുമാണ്‌.

ഇതുവരെ ഫിക്ഷനെ കണ്ട രീതിയില്‍ നിന്നും വ്യത്യസ്തമായി അതിനെ നോക്കിക്കാണാന്‍ ഈ പുസ്തകം എന്നെ സഹായിച്ചു. ഇതു വരെ എന്റെ ശ്രദ്ധയില്‍ പെടാതെ പോയ ഫിക്ഷന്റെ അമൂല്യമായ പല സവിശേഷതകളും ഈ പുസ്തകം എനിക്കു കാട്ടിത്തന്നു.
