little things, big things...

“I decided to listen to my heart. My life became so much simpler and meaningful when I left the baggage of my past behind. The moment I stopped spending so much time chasing the big pleasures of life, I began to enjoy the little ones, like watching the stars dancing in a moonlit sky or soaking in the sunbeams of a glorious summer morning.”

the monk who sold his ferrari

title: The monk who sold his Ferrari
Author: robin sharma

Publishers: jaico books (2007)

Isbn: 978-81-7992-706-9

I had seen reviews and comments on this book in various places online, but never once read any of them as I generally don’t have the habit of reading reviews as I am afraid that the views of the reviewer might affect the way I see the book thus denying me the freedom to have an unbiased and original appreciation of it. Nevertheless the captivating title was successful in casting a spell on me, and that’s how my mind made a little note of it. And when after a while I saw this in a bookshop I bought it without much thinking. But to say the truth, the contents of the book failed to bring out that fascination in me that was sparked by its title.

I love reading about spirituality. But I guess this book has raped spirituality. It is all about shallow spirituality. It is all about creating formulas and shortcuts out of hardcore spirituality. It is guilty of having oversimplified the entire concept of spirituality. Spirituality basically is something that is to be experienced. Our selves can’t attain an exalted level of being just by blindly following some easy shortcut techniques. It is like learning swimming by reading a how-to swimming book. One can’t learn how to swim just by reading a book. One has to take the plunge and struggle with water and be committed and perseverant enough and has to go through a pretty tiresome procedure before one finally becomes capable of managing to keep oneself floating on the surface of the water. I am not saying that one has no right to write a book on spirituality. When a person who has firsthand experience of the spiritual world writes a book, it ignites a spark in the mind of the reader which evokes an interest in him/her to pursue the path of spirituality and self fulfillment in his/her own way. And creating that spark is the maximum a spiritual book can do. But this book enumerates certain formulas claiming that one who follows those shortcut techniques are bound to attain the highest levels of self realization that the great sages of the past had attained. The feeling I got when I read the book is that the author doesn’t have any firsthand spiritual experience. Instead he must have read a lot about spirituality and have compiled great principles and made a book out of it. And perhaps that’s why the author instead of telling the story in the first person employs a character julian to narrate the spiritual principles that is supposed to help anyone in becoming successful in their businesses and works through the medium of a fable.

The people who have given the title of leadership guru to the author are those lazy ones who always wants to make great money in their businesses and at the same time are looking for shortcut paths to achieve their goals. Their eyes are always on the goal, but they are not ready to tread the hard path that leads towards it. Instead they need if-you-do-this-you-will-get-this kind of formulas. And that’s why this book became such a big bestseller.

But the truth is that such formula books have never helped anyone in achieving their goals. If anyone has achieved anything it is just because he/she has it in him/her. He/she would have made it even without such a book.

But still I have great love for the title of this book. It is a fabulous title indeed for a book that deals with the subject of self-realization. Only the contents need to be changed!

saudi, i love you! and hate you!

(note: each and every word of this post has been written in the light of my own experience and limited knowledge, and not as a result of any research. therefore, this is meant to be a very subjective post. so, if your opinions differ, it is quite normal.)

my home is where my feet are. this is how i used to think always. the entire world belongs to me! vasudhaiva kutumbakam!!?? thus, saudi arabia also became my home for a while. but now it's time to say goodbye. i'm off. i may never return to this place again. first, to delhi from here. i can't resist the urge to meet rakhi, to hug and kiss her and cry(she will burst into tears the moment she sees me. then i too will fail in holding back my tears!). and i'll plant a peck on her mummy's brow too. i also want to hold her drunkard yet sweethearted papa tight to myself, though it will only be hours later that he would recognize me if he is in a drunken state. then from there, i have to dart off to my home in kerala.

this land has given a lot to me. and yet snatched away many things from me. looking back at this moment of parting, what do i see? what is the feeling i have for this country? is it love? or hate? sure, there are enough reasons to love this part of the world. and to hate.. yeah, unfortunately, there are enough reasons to hate it too. and i tried hard to hate it for all the ugly faces it has shown me, but in vain. i now know that a hundred excuses to hate it fail to hold water when juxtaposed against one single excuse to love it.

warning: what follows is an account of my little joys and sorrows here in this land, which can be an extremely dull read. to save yourself from being bored to death, stop reading here and just take an about turn and run for your life in whichever direction you want!

my lazy stroll through the street was transformed to hell by children who pelted stones at me. i didn't scold or admonish them. neither did i chase them and apply my hard knuckles on their impudent skulls. all that can hardly bring about any difference in them. in fact, they are totally oblivious to what they do. it is just one of the numerous things that they have been practising for centuries or even millennia. these are the same people who threw stones at the prophet. it is just one of their favourite pastimes to throw stones at foreigners who walk in the streets, especially asians, as they are mostly labourers who pursue comparatively low-grade jobs, and hence despicable, slaves, in their eyes. is slavery not being haram an excuse for this attitude? these people can't be beaten by anyone in their racist tendencies. how can a people who believe that tribes and clans are above all else and have fought battles with their own race for the sake of their honour and keep picking rows from time to time in their names respect those that belong to other races? it has been almost one and a half millennia since the quran told that man has been divided into tribes and sects only in order to identify each other and that the most high in rank before god is the one most alert in one's faith. but alas! somehow, they have missed the point.

but they have something that most of us lack. it is one of the most prominent factors that prevent me from harbouring any feelings of hatred towards them. pure, innocent love. once they love you, they love you so truly and blindly that they don't hesitate in making any number of sacrifices for you. many of them are so naive. is it this same naiveness that takes away from them any inhibition in hurling stones at the passers-by whenever they feel an urge to do so? this land gave me a bunch of good friends. their friendship is enough for me to forget all my wrath to all others here. there are some other sweet memories too. this land even gifted me one of her darling daughters as my sweetheart for a while, though i couldn't get even a glimpse of her face hidden in the veil even once in spite of exchanging love and fondness and caring for each other for months. here, even love is incomplete when one has to bother about making sure from time to time that one's head still rests intact upon one's shoulders.

then there are those mutawwas(religious police) that prevent one from enjoying an evening outdoors. it's a rule that all shops and commercial establishments be closed when the call for prayer is heard from the mosques' loudspeakers. only after the prayers are over, i.e., after around half an hour, are they allowed to be reopened. during this time, the mutawwa-jeeps keep patrolling in the streets to check for any shops that are not closed and subject their owners to penalty. and, if they spot anyone loitering around without going to mosque to attend the prayers, they will be caught and taken with them. and prayers are there five times a day. when this is the present scenario of things, how could one be able to spend an evening outside breathing some fresh air? furthermore, there are no parks for loners. entry to parks is restricted to families only.

even refraining from going out and sitting in one's own room blogging away the time is risky in this place. and, what significance could a blog be of where there is no freedom of expression? yet, when the urge was too strong to resist, i too started a blog for the first time. in myspace( i never knew about blogger back then). but soon, somehow i started getting the uneasy feeling that my blog too was being under surveillance like many other websites. the long-bearded clerics were the people that controlled all internet services(it was only two or three months ago that the control was transferred to the communications department). so, all signals of my blog as well as webpages i visited had to pass through the servers of these clerics. when i heard the dreadful sounds of my heart thumping harder and harder, i looked no further. i deleted my blog straightaway. and burnt my precious handwritten diary too. and blogging remained just a dream for months. but dreams die hard. and i made yet another blog. this time in blogger. i started blogging anew with great care and alertness. still i kept getting the feeling that there was something wrong with my blog that might land me in trouble. in a short time, statcounter showed me that readers from some saudi i.p. addresses were spending hours diligently reading each and every post of mine. my heart started racing again. but this time, more than fear, disappointment and grief engulfed me. i didn't want to delete my blog once again. instead i started deleting one by one all the posts that others might 'feel bad about' or 'offensive'. but then, after this process, when i had a look at my blog, i felt as if i was looking at a blog written by someone else. it didn't look like mine at all. without further ado, i went to settings -> delete blog. and that was it! thus my second blog too vanished into thin air. both times, were there actually any authorities monitoring me? i can never be sure. perhaps it was all just my fear. anyway, once again, i lost all my connection with blogging for months. until i found out that there was an option to make use of a password and lock your blog. immediately i started yet another blog. before making any other settings, i switched off the feed. none other than me should read my blog! then i applied the password and locked my blog. none other than me should visit my blog! it's only after doing these that i made all other settings and started blogging again for the third time. and i blogged peacefully and secretly for several months. and i alone visited it and read it as a personal diary. by this time, it had been a little more than a year since king abdulla had sworn in as the new ruler of saudi arabia. and all had been witnessing the numerous steps of reforms taken by this liberal king unlike earlier monarchs in order to liberate the people from the shackles of ignorance and age-old orthodox superstitions and to march the country in the path of progress and modernity. human rights and freedom of expression started to be valued at least once in a while. journalists being taken prisoners for writing honest -- yet unpalatable to some -- accounts of what was going around started becoming a thing of history. like many others, i too drew a great deal of courage and fresh energy from all this. i couldn't wait further. i simply abandoned my password and kept the blog wide open for the world to see. and this very blog you are reading right now is it. but nervertheless nobody can be completely sure about anything. anything can happen any moment here. even today, i am startled by an unusual sound of something stirring nearby, irrespective of whether it is at the residence or the workplace or outdoors. each night i go to bed listening to the frightening sounds of my heavy heratbeats fearful of the dreaded knock at the door any moment.

nature has been always there to turn to when trust and confidence in humans seemed not to work. on one hand, even as the thick green of the date palms brought a glint to the eyes, i couldn't help but bow in the overwhelming awe elicited by the expanse of the sand dunes of the vast desert on the other. the queer pleasant feeling when the scorching summer wind blows past my face burning it is something i'm going to miss when i'm back home. the freedom to worship god could be the ultimate freedom one can expect here. there is hardly any considerable freedom in most other matters. hence i had to create a cute little closed world of my own. i savoured the nectar of the life in my own private little world. i learned to love loneliness. as osho says, it is not loneliness, but aloneness. loneliness is when you feel bored of it. it is when nobody is there with you. but aloneness is when you have yourself for company. it is when you enjoy being alone. as the saying goes, loneliness is not when you are alone and feel a gap between you and others, but when you feel a gap between you and yourself. perhaps i have always loved solitude, but back home there are rare chances of being alone. perhaps that is why i failed to notice it. now when i go back, searching for solitude is going to be one of my hard tasks.

i can't finish this post without jotting a few lines about the beloved monarch, king abdulla. he has been one of the reasons for me to love this country. all the previous rulers of this kingdom were living in their own closed worlds. with few diplomatic and friendly relationships with other countries, this nation remained an isolated island in the international scenario of things. which meant that even if someone attacked the kingdom that is weak in defence from outside, there will hardly be any country that would utter even a word in their favour, not to mention extend any support. perhaps it is a deep understanding of this drawback that set the new king on a round of trips around the nations, especially the third-world ones, of the world immediately after swearing in. he has been successful in forging a strong, cherishable bond with india within this short period of time. for the first time in the history of this nation where a female is not free to move around in public without a male chaperon from her family, a group of fifty female students from here made a trip to india to study about the country, without the black abaya that covers the body from head to toe or the veil that keeps the face hidden. a lot of girls work in various establishments today whereas it was forbidden until recently. where a lack of higher education facilities paved the path for the intellectual invasion from the west, abdulla took special interests in designing speedy proposals for new universities as a major step in the direction of moulding a self-reliant nation whose number of major universities could be counted with the fingers of a single hand. the freedom of the mass media such as newspapers and the internet is on the rise. whereas only about two years ago taking journalists prisoners was a usual news, now it has become history. blogger.com used to be blocked time and again. that has also moved to oblivion now. the practice of blocking blogs has also ended. the control of the internet network of the country which had been under the ministry of religious affairs until only a few months ago has now been transferred to the information ministry. the national tv channel that once aired not much other than quran recitation has now programs wherein mixed groups of boys and girls hold discussions on serious issues of the country. two human rights committees exist in saudi today. people don't hesitate anymore to approach the monarch directly in cases where they are denied justice. in a country devoid of cinema halls a film festival was conducted for the first time. even a fashion parade was held(eventhough only female spectators were allowed). book fairs are being conducted in a land where books, reading, readers, library, bookshops, all are rare species. in a nation whose constitution is the quran, the edicts of the clergy are rulings from the divine itself. but king abdulla intervened in many cases where the accused were innocent viewed from a human angle, although the religious judges had pronounced a decree of punishment for them, and unconditionally released them. there were no actions against the crimes of the clergy themselves until recent times. they were always considered above law, blemishless. but now, a group of clerics is facing trial in the court for crimes allegedly committed by them -- yet another first in saudi history. no doubt if the voluntary efforts made by the king in establishing friendship and unity among the middle-east nations that are at odds with each other continue the same way as now, he is going to win the nobel peace prize in the next five or ten years. i guess never has a ruler existed in this country who has been so loved and accepted by the expatriates and the citizens alike.

nevertheless there is a long way to go yet. and there is no idea as to how long it's going to take.

this is my final post from saudi arabia. it is a very very very incomplete and imperfect one. i have presented herein only a very vague profile of things. there are hundreds other reasons for me to like as well as dislike this nation. an attempt to state all of them will make this a tiringly lengthy post. moreover, i have not enough time for such an endeavour.

anyway, saudi, time's up. bye bye.

i love you!
and also hate,.. err..no.. still trying to hate, you!

ഞാന്‍ നിന്നെ സ്നേഹിക്കുന്നു;

a tale of two cities

Book: A tale of two cities
Author: charles dickens

Publ: wordsworth classics(1999)
Isbn: 1-85326-039-8

This is a tale of certain individuals whose lives were drastically affected by certain political changes that took place in two cities. The cities are London and paris. French revolution is a backdrop for the most important parts of the tale. This book opened a little window to the background of the French revolution for me. I never had any idea at all of French revolution before reading this book.

This is the third dickens novel I have read (apart from two others that don't count as I read them so carelessly that I still don't know what they are all about). After reading three dickens novels, my mind has framed its own picture of what dickens is. I now know that to have a clear appreciation of a dickens book, I have to read it at least twice. But as I'm lazy and don't like the idea of reading a book twice repeatedly, the best thing I can do is to read him extremely attentively and carefully so that at least I know what the book is all about by the time I finish it. I have come to know from my dickens reading experience so far that he is not meant for an easy reading. He demands a great deal of concentration. The two other books I have read are the great expectations and oliver twist. And out of all three, what I love most is the great expectations. It is the one I read extremely carefully and seriously too. And my admiration in part for the book is due to the author's technique of incorporating elements of fantasy into real life situations. And he does it so cleverly that one doesn't find any seam between the two worlds. He is without doubt a writer of great ability and has a characteristic style of writing and does make use of various techniques in his works. And of his various techniques, this one of blending the real with the fantastic is the one I admire most. And so far I have seen it at its peak in the great expectations. Perhaps that's why it is the dickens book I love the most. In it, he has embedded an entire fairy tale in the main bulk of the story. And it was greatly fascinating! In a tale of two cities too, that style is there, but only in a minor way, and mostly scattered here and there.

Another major feature of Dickensian literature is the way he connects various characters and incidents in the plot with each other. He gives meaning to his stories by putting straight the jumble of characters and incidents that appear in earlier parts, mostly in the first half, of the plot. In all his books I have read, there have appeared different characters and incidents in the beginning of the book which we consider unimportant and having nothing to do with the central theme. But astonishingly enough, all those people and happenings that we prefer to overlook and disregard as unnecessary insertions and appear not to have any immediate association to what we read are indeed the ones that make up the real story. That's why dickens is not an easy read. Each and every word is to be paid due attention to. Otherwise chances are that we end up finishing the book without even knowing what the book was all about.

One thing I specifically noted in this book, a tale of two cities, is his way of assuming sort of equivalents for certain situations and substituting them later on in places where the same thing is repeated. For example, in a scene of a trial in the court, the sound of occasional murmurings among the people witnessing the trial is described as similar to the buzz of a swarm of blue bees. Later on, whenever the murmuring sounds of people occur, he says that the bees buzzed again. One who reads the part where he compares the sound to the buzz of bees carelessly may think that there were really some bees in the court. This is one more reason that demands some seriousness while reading dickens. But with dickens, there is no doubt that we get a fabulous reading experience if we are diligent in our approach. Oliver twist is one book of which I read some parts way too carelessly and hence couldn't get a complete grasp of the story and hence couldn't appreaciate much.

There are other two dickens books I have read, but don't dare to count as read since I never understood what they were all about. The books are a christmas carol and other stories and Nicholas nickleby. Both were read when I was just a beginner in reading English books. And I now know dickens is a wrong choice for a beginner, especially one like me! In fact I had heard the name a Christmas carol even in my schooldays. My sister had this story as a nondetailed English text book in her school. And it's then I knew that there was someone called charles dickens. But I didn't have to study the book since I was in a different school with a different syllabus. But later when I joined the pre-degree course, I found a good library in the college with a good collection of English books. It is from there that I borrowed a Christmas carol and other stories. It was a collection of stories by dickens. i read it from the beginning to the end, without understanding a single thing in it. And after a year, we had to learn his Nicholas nickleby as part of our English syllabus. I failed then too. But I prepared for the exams learning the questions & answers from one of those numerous pre-degree guides sold by bookshops and thus failed to see into the real story!

The more I read dickens the more I get convinced that I can't really get much of him without an earnest approach. Perhaps there is no other author I have read so far that demands so much attentiveness as dickens.

the traditions of islam

Book: The traditions of islam
Author: Alfred Guillaume
Year: 1924

This is a book about hadiths. It gives a brief summary of the vast collection of hadith literature of islam, encompassing all the most prominent aspects of it. It can be an excellent primer for a person who knows nothing about hadith and is about to embark upon a study of it, as it opens a little window providing a brilliant synoptical view of the huge and diverse bulk of hadith literature.

This book was published in 1924. one may think this fact makes it an irrelevant read for today as there are numerous books available on the subject published in recent times. But the truth, I guess, is otherwise. The very fact that it was published around three quarters of a century back makes it a very relevant read for today, as most of the literature published on islam in the recent times, especially after the sept. 11 attacks of new york, provide a pitiably misleading and incomplete picture of the religion. Recent tug-of-wars between the muslims and anti-muslims have created a distorted perception of islam in the minds of people.

My personal conviction is that an independent thinking student of islam will find the entire hadith literature a fifty-fifty affair; i.e., one half of it is full of such instances that exalt the image of the prophet to the level of a perfect human being and tries to show that islam is a peaceful and practical way of life for the entire world, whereas the other half can appear to be detrimental to the image of islam itself as well as the reputation of the prophet. The anti-muslims give more emphasis on the latter half as their aim is to show that islam is bad. And as a response muslims, in a bid to safeguard their faith, blow up the former half out of normal proportions.

But this book is purely a scholarly study having nothing to do with either group of activists and hence it has been successful in presenting an independent and unbiased overall view of the subject maintaining a good balance between the two halves mentioned above. If anything, it has apparently given a bit more weightage to the better half.

Eventhough this book is written by a non-muslim, muslims must not be prejudiced that it is a creation with the intention of tainting the image of islam. Instead, they must read it before arriving at any conclusion. In fact, every muslim as well as non-muslim has to read this book to get an impartial as well as uncesnsored view of Islamic traditions.

Exit notepad, enter word

A few months back, I had jettisoned msword and started using notepad to draft my posts before pasting them onto my blog, because I thought I was so much in love with small letters that I didn't want the word to autocorrect my English in order to transform the small letters in the grammatically inappropriate places—like the beginning of a sentence etc.—to caps. But now, when I was skimming through some of my older posts I realized how much I missed the capital letters. I never thought it was so gorgeous to see the caps in their rightful places. I saw those big letters in perfect harmony with the small ones. And they appeared so sweetly calm and quiet, loyal and patient, never complaining of my jilting them, ever ready at my service. Never before have they looked so dear to me. But still I'm such a lazybone that I don't want to use that extra finger to press the shift key to create capital letters. That is why now I have called word back to my blog as it can take care of converting small letters to caps in most of the places necessary and my lazy self can go on typing entirely in small letters. So, bye bye notepad, welcome word!

isbn: 81-226-0495-1

i couldn't like this book. maybe it's due to my problem. or maybe it's a problem of the book itself.

what i think as my problem is this: i could never take interest in news related to things like mysterious deaths, murders, suicide, abduction, political controversies, rape, female-torture, pimp rackets, suicide bombers, terrorism, missing people etc. at times, i have tried hard to keep myself informed about such things to save myself from the hard feeling that it's somehow very bad not to be aware of the things going on in the society around me, but all in vain. i couldn't make my mind enthusiastic about such news, irrespective of whether it is in the newspapers or on the tv screen or even a discussion among friends. instead it keeps wandering in strange lands. nevertheless it makes me feel guilty not to make an effort to know or sympathise about people who turned out to be less privileged than i and thus fell into the brutal hands of fate. and this book is about rajan, an old r.e.c. student who was taken by the police and died in their custody as a result of their cruel torture sessions. the contents of this book are the memoirs of rajan's father eachara varier about his struggle for justice after rajan's controversial disappearance.

now, what could be the problem with the book itself that made me dislike it? i guess it is this: rather than the grief inflicted on him by the loss of his son, eachara varier concentrates in this book more on his fight for justice and all complications involved. but the reader gets the feeling that what he is trying to tell you is not about winning the case or achieving his objective, but rather he dwells on how the case became the major talk of the town and what stir it created in the land. it seems as though he is trying to explain how great was the battle that he fought for his cause relentlessly taking the case to the greatest of courts with litigations against the most prominent of political leaders, high officials and authorities. he sounds too vehement while explaining what popularity the case gained among the people and how they thronged the courts to witness the hearing of the case. he has tried to be poetic in the portions where he talks about his agony of losing his son. and those portions, to be honest, looked awkward. how could one think of adorning one's feelings about the barbarity one's son had to undergo? was he trying to make romantic literature at the cost of his son's death? it's all too beyond my intelligence to grasp. but i truly feel sorry for rajan for the brutal ordeal he had to go through.

if i have been utterly wrong in understanding the book and been disrespectful about the feelings of a father for his son, here i am at your feet, eachara varier, begging your pardon. and dear readers who loved this book, kindly forgive me who couldn't love it.

saumerikeralines സൗമേരിക്കേരളൈന്‍സ്‌

i had this dream in my sleep a couple of days back.

dream: morning. a house in the u.s. but the architecture doesn't look western at all. it is very similar to a house in kerala. it is pretty large and long with a lot of rooms. i am in a room at the front.

reality: i use to have direct as well as indirect interaction with a lot of keralites in the u.s. sometimes i think i would also go to america soon.

dream: i was planning on going out. i just left the room and stepped in to the corridor. i saw a fair-complexioned woman coming in my direction from the other end of the long corridor. it was the hollywood actress cameron diaz, though neither her face nor her appearance resembled diaz even a tiny bit. she was wearing a very short frock that extended only a little below the hip.

reality: i remember reading some piece of news about cameron diaz on the internet recently.

dream: even as she walked, she appeared to be removing the panties she was wearing. and in the process, she accidently exposed the triangular patch of black hair on her white crotch to me for a fleeting moment. i wondered why she couldn't remove her panties in her own room. but then, i thought she might not have been aware that i was there. it was only the previous day i arrived there. and the utterly quiet house where nothing appeared to stir seemed to be occupied by no one other than herself. but i thought she would be mortified when she knew that i saw her act and her nakedness and might even turn around and walk away to avoid encountering me. but she didn't stop. she continued walking and finally came near me. i felt she was a bit embarrassed however, though she succeeded in hiding it. she seemed to resemble a filipino lady who was a little stouter than cameron diaz and used to work in saudi arabia earlier.

reality: a few days back, i met a filipino couple in the street with a little girl lisping away in the filipino tongue. it reminded me of the other filipino lady whom i used to know earlier as she too had a little girlchild. she used to bring her to the workplace sometimes. her colleagues enjoyed playing with the lovely kid and showering their affection on her. secret discussions were prevalent among at least some of them that the child was not born of a legal father. she only lived with her mother.

dream: the front door of the house was wide open. i stood there beside her. the passers-by in the street could see her in the short frock through the open door. i was amazed at her standing there for the world to see without covering herself from head to toe. i was wondering if she wasn't afraid of the religious police who might scold or even punish her if they see her exposing herself to the public. it was then that it dawned on me that i was not in saudi arabia. it was america.

reality: saudi females, when they go to america, abandon their long black robes that cover them from head to toe including the face and don normal clothes as others around them do.

dream: we exchanged civilities. she talked in a very friendly manner with a pleasant smile on her face. i was speechless seeing her speaking fluent malayalam like a native speaker of the language, despite being an american! now the woman i saw before me was neither cameron diaz nor the filipina, but an anglo indian from fort cochin.

reality: most of the members of the anglo indian community of fort cochin have been successful in merging themselves with the mainstream culture of kerala so seamlessly, especially in matters of clothing and language. only a very minor fraction of females among them prefer western style outfits to sari or churidar. from their appearance, one tends to think that they can't speak malayalam without making a lot of mistakes. but actually, when they start talking, one finds hardly any difference compared to the language of other speakers of malayalam.

dream: there are a couple or so steps from the front door to the courtyard. when i turned around, i found a toddler playing on those steps. the woman stooped down and lifted up the baby with affection and made it rest against her bosom with great tenderness.

i opened the main gate and stepped out. the places, people and things i saw around me were not in the least american. actually, i was walking though a neighbourhood in kerala that i hadn't visited for the past few years.

book: bhaagapathram
author: s. ramesan nair

publ: current books
isbn: 81-240-1600-3

this is a collection of poems. it's been many years since i read poems. i guess i don't have enough capacity for an appraisal or even proper enjoyment of poetry. i can't determine whether i liked the poems or not, or if they are good or worthless. so why did i read poetry now? just for a change? no. not at all. any book is a boon in a land where books, bookshops, libraries, reading and readers are all rare species. this time, what came into my hands is this poetry book.

a fragment of thought that crossed my mind: there are a lot of poems on various blogs. and i guess many of them are not of any less quality than those of ramesan nair's (or maybe it's just an illusion on my part just because of my lack of ability to properly appreciate them). shouldn't publishers publish the creations of writers based only on their quality?, i.e., without taking into consideration who the author is. but then, readers should also be buying and reading books for their quality and not because a particular writer has written it!

i loved the cover design very very very very very very much!(it is many times more beautiful in reality than in the picture here). thanks a huge bunch to james who designed it!

the king james bible

book: the king james bible(with apocrypha)

so finally, i have finished reading the bible. this is the king james version (with apocrypha). it's been a year or more since i started reading it. but i was never reading it continually. rather, as and when the time allowed and i was in the right mood, i read it little by little. and at times, i temporarily stopped reading them for days on end which sometimes extended to even more than a month. i guess religious scriptures are to be read this way; otherwise you are bound to be bored to death ;)

as most of the folks out there know, it contains the old and new testaments. and this edition also has the section of the books of apocrypha sandwiched in between the two testaments.

to a reader like me for whom it is nothing more than a book that opens some windows to the world of the past, the old testament offers anything interesting only in the first half, since those portions of the testament give us some idea about the society, culture, beliefs and practices, customs, geography and various other aspects of the lives of a people who lived in an age and place different from our own. and one who is really enthusiastic about history has to read a great deal between the lines too. you find therein a picture of a far less civilized people living like wild beasts bound by nothing better than the rules of the jungle. the pages are largely soaked with blood, what with all those barbaric genocides. a reader witnesses thousands of murders in almost every page. countless nations and tribes are ruthlessly subjected to the sword and entire cities are set ablaze in order to capture the 'promised land'. and the supreme commander who provides all moral support and passes edicts as to how to go about the whole chain of actions is none other than god himself! hardly anything human could be sighted in these pages. the bulk of the history mainly lies in these pages of the first half of the old testament. the second half is really a dragging read. it is basically about various people preaching the religion, i.e., judaism, to their communities through admonitions and proclamations. but all have the same message for their people. that they have to worship only the one true god and give due respects and offerings to him only and shun all other deities and practices and rituals associated with them. they are also reminded about the severe punishment from god in case they fail to follow this right path. so, the major bulk of the second part of the old testament is about this single message put into words in an extensively descriptive manner over and over again in a thousand and one different ways by numerous prophets and priests who are believed to be inspired by the divine. this repetitive and monotonous nature of those pages make for a dull read, except for one thing which was a great discovery to me! the world famous song, by the rivers of babylon, sung by the great music band boney-m is actually taken from a section of the book of psalms of the old testament. section 137 to be precise. the idea of the song and even most of the words have been borrowed from this particular chapter of psalms. the initial lines of the song are exactly same as those of this chapter. and some other lines are also similar with minor changes. i have been listening to this song from my very childhood and have always been tremendously fascinated by its captivating charm. but i never knew it had something to do with the bible, that too such a close connection, until i read the psalms.

the apocrypha books, the authenticity of which is disputed among various groups of christians and thus not included in some editions of the bible, are also not any more interesting than the second half of the old testament. most of the ideas contained in it are mere repetitions of parts of the old testament. it appeared having nothing new to offer.

then comes the new testament where one gets to have a glimpse of something human after all those heinous crimes and heartless tribal bigotry. and it is all attributed to the man called jesus. he handled things with a human touch, going against the norms of the religion prevalent hitherto in the process, and thus inciting hatred among the clergy which led to his persecution and finally, death. the initial four gospels written by mathew, luke, mark and john provide accounts of his life, though with some variations. the remaining books are mainly descriptions of how his followers travelled about after his death preaching the new religion-- or the new version of the old religion rather-- taught by him and letters written by them to various nations and communities in order to spread the word. in these pages, one sees how the foundation of the new religion is erected with the help of a new set of fundamental beliefs and practices that distinguished it from the old faith. but it was not yet time for a new name. the apostles never once mentioned the name christianity. they continued calling themselves jews. judaism itself remained their religion, but of course with the new set of reforms.

ode to books..

"Books, BOOKS...oh how I love you...
I smell you, rub you, touch you...love you. CARESS YOU!
I throw you, bend you, tear you...put my imprint on you.
Books, books..oh you take me away.
To France, Iran...Iowa and the beach.
I have made love in your pages, I have cried in you...died in you.
Books...BOOKS...
Magical and loyal."
