title: munpe parakkunna pakshikal

i happened to hear about c. radhakrsihnan for the first time only when munpe parakkunna pakshikal won the vayalar award. but it's only now that i got an opportunity to read this book. anyone who loves to see peace and tranquillity established in the world always will love this splendid book. the author has succeeded in the proper design of the plot and the expression of ideas. but any reader could see that it is not for the plot but for the glow of ideas that the award has been given. the major points of the core idea are expressed in the form of conversations between the characters. and it's fabulous! the book makes an attempt to find out answers to various questions pertaining to the pros and cons of the philosophy of armed revolution, and in the process ushers the reader into a realm of serious thought. for a good-hearted reader, reading this book will not be a waste of time.

we live as we dream...

"it is impossible; it is impossible to convey the life-sensation of any given epoch of one's existence-- that which makes its truth, its meaning-- its subtle and penetrating essence. It is impossible. We live, as we dream-- alone..."

somebodies and nobodies...

"Everyone is afraid of being nobody. Only very rare and extraordinary people are not afraid of being nobody. A nobody is not an ordinary phenomenon; it is one of the greatest experiences in life--that you are, and still you are not. That you are just pure existence with no name, with no address, with no boundaries... neither a sinner nor a saint, neither inferior nor superior, just a silence. Your somebodiness is so small. The more you are somebody, the smaller you are. Once you feel your nobodiness you have become immortal, and you are one with the existence itself."

the satanic verses

title: The satanic verses
author: salman rushdie

like most of rushdie's novels, this also needs to be read at least twice for a proper appreciation. this has all the characteristics typical to a rushdian novel, but in a bit more complicated way.

in this book, chronology loses all its significance. the story switches back and forth between the early days of islam and today. some personalities of the era of jahilia appears in the scenes of today and vice versa. people, places and time, all get mixed up. apart from the islamic stuff, the book contains too many allusions and puns that a great deal of general knowledge is required to get a good grasp of them all. an indian muslim can enjoy the book very well as a considerable portion of the book deals with islamic history and the indian culture. but ironically, it was the muslims who enjoyed it the least as criticism of islam is not easily accepted by muslims unlike other religious communities. the chapters that depict the jahiliya arabia and the early days of islam are real masterpieces of fiction. british and arabian cultures are also represented in this book.

i have a request to rushdie, and it is this: please condense and cut short your books into half their sizes. that way, they could be many more times enjoyable. because one thing i have experienced with rushdie's books is that the first quarter of the book is incredibly interesting and one gets totally immersed in it and the pages get flipped over at a tremendous pace. the second quarter is not as good, but not boring either. after this first half, the problem begins. the book becomes a dragging read because the reader has imbibed enough of rushdie from the first half. and he/she knows that nothing different from the first half is awaiting him/her in the second half, because rushdie's books never have a well formed structure as he is not a writer who believes in the overall structure of the plot. his plots always look haphazard. with other authors' books, even if the second half appears to be boring, the reader reads on with the expectation that there would be some new turn in the story etc. and there's the curiosity to know how it all ends. but with rushdie, there is no expecting anything about the pages to come. his books are a page-to-page entertainment. with his works, the enjoyment is in the reading itself and not with the story or how it ends. he plays with words and ideas in remarkably amusing ways. as sasi tarur has told, he is the greatest prose-stylist of our times. it's true. and that's what an admirer of rushdie always looks for in his books. and if a person can't take interest in such word and idea games, he has nothing to do with rushdian literature. anything implausible and utterly inconsistent with reality can happen in his stories. and that's his style. in this book too, the entire design is that of a fable that moves through a series of mythical and imaginary incidents and characters. one who looks for consistency gets utterly lost in various calculations and assumptions when the author portrays sisodia as a stammering person or rekha merchant as floating in the air sitting on a carpet reminding one of the stories of the arabian nights. he/she thinks that it is all symbolic. but there is hardly any symbolism in rushdie's works. it's all inconsistent with reality, but still they have no hidden inner meanings. they are all just a part of his playful literature. there is no need to search for what the 'symbols' represent.

and then there were none

title: And then there were none
author: Agatha Christie

isbn: 0-312-33087-1

ten people, lured into a house on a lonely, rocky island by someone by fraudulent invitations, are to be killed one by one for crimes they had committed in their past, which were not reckoned crimes in the eyes of law and thus were left unpunished. their host was nowhere to be seen. deaths happen one by one. after three mysterious deaths, they conclude that the perpetrator was one among them, since all transportation and communication was cut off from the island. but who was it? that was the puzzle. they start supecting each other strongly. the only people who were beyond any suspicion were unfortunately the ones who were already dead..

a nice read indeed!

this was my second read of the book. i had read this thrilling book years ago as a malayalam translation. and this was the first time i read anything by agatha christie in the original. the initial pages reminded me of The five people you meet in heaven by Mitch Albom in which the protagonists are responsible for the death of someone or other indirectly, without even being aware of it the entire life. also, memories of a couple of movies came to mind. one is The flatliners in which Julia Roberts enacts a main character. it's about a group of medical students, four or five of them, performing experiments with their own bodies. they stop their heartbeats using a cardiac defibrillator for a few seconds, during which all the activities in the body stop completely and only the brain remains active -- active in a very sharp way. it brings back some flashes of long forgotten memories of the childhood or teens. it shows them vivid pictures and scenes from their past and helps them rediscover some crime they had committed as a child or some unpleasant incident they had experienced in their past, the significance or seriousness of which was incomprehensible for their innocent and immature minds back then. another movie was a hindi remake of the agatha christie's book itself. the name was, i guess, Anjaan or Benaam. but i don't remember if it was an exact remake or one with some modifications suitable for the indian cinema. i remember there were songs in it, an inevitability in a bollywood masala.

strike: ksa no exception സൗദിയിലും സമരം

it is believed that saudi arabia is a land of no strikes and demonstrations as it is not a democracy. it is a monarchy and theocracy governed by strict religious rules where freedom of expression is not very common.

perhaps the first of its kind, a strike has been staged by a group of more than 800 bangladeshis against the injustice of their employers. their company had deprived them of their salaries for the past two months and the overtime wages of three months, apart from several other negligences. the company management had to order the repayment of the delayed salary of the labourers immediately following the intervention of the saudi security patrol.

that said, strikes and demonstrations have a negative side too. when people see that a strike has turned out successful, they will resort to more strikes, bandhs and hartals for even silly reasons which can cause many an undesirable consequence. ask a keralite to know what a strike means.

the prophet has told that a labourer's wages has to be provided way before his sweat gets dried up. nevertheless there are countless companies in the kingdom of saudi arabia that deprive their workers of their salary for months- sometimes even up to as much as 6 months or even a year.

recently the saudi labour ministry has formulated new rules to tackle such problems which are expected to come into force soon.

a train of the poor പാവങ്ങളുടെ തീവണ്ടി

i ran into this unique voice that stood out from the cacophony of the recent samjhouta incident. a touching article in The Indian Express by Sagarika Ghose dealing with some different aspects of the trip that is supposed to bridge gaps. i loved the article so much that i didn't want to finish off the post by just placing a link to it. instead i copied the entire thing and pasted it here:

"A train of the poor:

The Samjhauta Express carries so many small and precious possibilities on board. After the investigations into the blasts are over, we need to ask why officialdom on both sides treats them with such suspicion and disregard

On a freezing January night three years ago two Indian Express journalists queued up to board the train to Pakistan. The Attari-Samjhauta Express stood at the Old Delhi railway station decorated with buntings, gold and silver paper stars and rose and marigold garlands. The train had been suspended in 2002 after the attack on the Indian Parliament, but now after a gap of two years, once again the humble little friendship express was all set to trundle between families torn apart by AK-47s, wire borders and massed troops.

On January 15 2004, the journalists had expected a sentimental flower-laden journey across the train’s inaugural run across the border. Instead we found ourselves on a gruelling trip aboard an inconvenient train, with customs officers and policemen harassing passengers at every turn. The mood on board was anything but syrupy and sentimental. Instead it was robustly impatient with the whims of politicians.

The Samjhauta Express or the Attari Express leaves Old Delhi railway station at 10 pm. It then travels to Attari, where the Attari Express changes formally into the Samjhauta Express. Three years ago this train too like the Indian one that comes to Attari was decorated with flowers, balloons and buntings. Ceremonially dressed BSF horsemen escorted the train to the border.

Who are the passengers aboard the Samjhauta Express? The Samjhauta Express is a train of the poor. It is a train of those who cannot afford to take the flight. And it is a train of those who journey to the Pakistan High Commission in Delhi from small towns in UP and Rajasthan to camp in the capital for months, sleeping in Nehru Park or ISBT in the sometimes hopeless wait for a visa.

The Samjhauta Express has few windows and on January nights a freezing wind rushes through the compartments as the passengers huddle under blankets. A great source of warmth is the smoke of Bidi No. 30. Every traveller is laden with gifts. Coconuts, elaichis, pressure cookers (much cheaper in India than in Pakistan), paan and cashew. One mother whose daughter is married in Pakistan said her daughter misses idlis, dosas and chow mein. In a tiffin packed tightly under plastic she proudly said she was taking uttapam and hakka noodles to Hyderabad.

There was a millworker from Bhilwara, a shawl merchant from Kashmir, jewellery shop owners from Indore. There was a graduate of the Aligarh Muslim University whose parents live on both sides of the border and who told us that every time he visits Pakistan, “agency-wallahs” (the ISI) try to recruit him. There was a Bollywood aspirant who loved India, there was a clerk from Palanpur and for us, the highlight of the trip, there was little Areeba with the face of an angel who darted between her parents legs peering out with a truly devilish grin.

Rishtedaari was the obsessive topic of conversation aboard the Samjhauta Express. The shawl merchant from Kashmir was on his way to visit his father’s grave. The Bollywood aspirant had come to India to catch a glimpse of Bombay, a city she said she loved more than her own parents. The millworker from Bhilwara and his wife had no children. They had saved money for three months to visit their nieces in Pakistan.

At almost every station in the journey, the travellers were poked and prodded by policemen. Constables jabbed at their bags, pulled down their beddings and opened up their suitcases. A packet of shami kababs was torn open. A tin of almonds sent skittering to the floor. After yesterday’s blasts, as the experts debate on the lack of intelligence on terrorism, maybe they should devote some attention to how brutally innocent passengers are treated by the police, how the stigma of “terrorist” seems to sit on every one of them just because they happen to be poor Muslims. A little less prejudice and a little more intelligence would perhaps stand the police in better stead when dealing with the passengers of the Samjhauta Express.

The customs and immigration formalities on the train are ghastly. Or at least they were three years ago. A six hour interminable wait takes place at Attari after the train pulls in there at 4 am. Officials are rude, rough and late. There was not a single seat at Attari station and passengers had to wait for hours until the first immigration officer turned up in the morning. Kafka-esque dramas followed after that, with parrot salesmen and peanut-traders being asked questions about the South Asian Free Trade Agreement and the ban on trade at the border.

“Why are you bringing parrots?” screamed an immigration officer. “To sell sir,” said the trader from Jaipur. “It’s illegal!” barked the officer. “No, no I want to sell parrots,” insisted the salesman. “You are a criminal!” shouted the officer. “But my family is in the parrot business for years,” insisted the salesman.

Many of the passengers simply do not know how to fill forms. Many don’t have passports because they believe that the passport of one family member is enough to see them through. The chaotic clash between illiterate rural folk and prejudiced brutal officialdom is perhaps similar to what would happen if international checkpoints were set up at Delhi’s Inter State Bus Terminus.

The story of harassment and delay is the same at Wagah. Here, the Pakistani customs and immigration officials are equally dilatory. The queues are endless, many go to sleep, there is the same all-round loud bewilderment at the triplicate forms. In the process many miss their connecting trains.

All high-sounding Confidence Building Measures and Composite Dialogue Process and Track II diplomacy seem like elite luxuries, mere diplomatic piffle compared to the gritty traumas on the Samjhauta Express. If the Indo-Pak dialogue wants to make a difference to ordinary lives, then perhaps the sharp-suited ambassadors and foreign secretaries might try to improve the quality of travel on this so-called showpiece of a train.

The last word of our journey thus belonged to Syed Yakoob, a tele-marketing operator: “All those rich people who go to seminars and talks on India-Pakistan peace, why don’t they actually travel by the Samjhauta Express to see what India-Pakistan peace is really about?”

thieves rob the religious police

many a time i have seen the colours of apprehension and dread on the faces of people in suq as the vehicle of the 'Commission for the Propagation of Virtue and Prevention of Vice' (most commonly known as the religious police or the mutawwa) rolled by.
however, it seems that the local thieves were too busy with their work to have any special consideration for anyone :)

salutations, o love!

happy valentine's day!

"Of those who love, do not ask
what life is theirs,
what longing, what yearning;
For they are leaves dead and dry
consumed by a fire
that is their own.."

"We bake a lump of clay,
Molded into a figure of you
And a figure of me.
Then we take both of them,
And break them into pieces,

I am in your clay.
You are in my clay.."

saudi girls in india

a group of girl students from the kingdom of saudi arabia has arrived in india on an educational and familiarization tour. the first of its kind, it's yet another goodwill gesture from both countries in the path of their development through amity and mutual co-operation.

have a good look at those beautiful faces. it's not everyday you get a chance for that in saudi arabia ;)

and, did anyone spot president kalam in the group picture? he's exactly in the centre, trapped among the girls.

yesterday i had this dream in my sleep:

first part:

dream: annie wanted me to draw a chart for her and gave me the paper and other stuff to prepare it.

reality: annie is a nurse working in a hospital where i used to work earlier. and i had talked to her on phone a week ago.
reality: people used to ask me for help in preparing charts when i was in school.

dream:
i sat down on the floor with the things to make the chart. it was one of the rooms in the o.p.d. section of a hospital. and people were waiting in the corridor outside this room to consult the doctors in their clinics. then a doctor came and sat in his seat just outside the room i was in. he was not in a closed clinic. rather it was an open area at the end of the corridor with a table and chair for him such that when he examines a patient, others would be standing around him. the doctor is none other than the renowned singer yesudas. i was on the floor near the door of the room and i noticed that the papers, books and other stuff for drawing that were scattered about near the door were an obstacle for people walking around. so i thought of moving them from there. then i felt embarrassed to stay there and make the drawing when the doctor was doing his work. so i got up from the floor and picked up my things and moved to some other part of the building. but as i passed him by, i noticed that i had left my lunch boxes open and unwashed, with the remains of food in it after eating by the wall near his chair.i bent down and took it when he glanced at me with a serious face, and i made a little solemn bow as if expressing apology with feigned respect and moved on.

reality: i don't have great respect for the person yesudas, eventhough i admire him as a singer.

second part:

dream: home. yesudas is sitting on the parapet, leaning the wall behind and with legs stretched out in front. he is wearing a lungi and a baniyan. he is having some relaxation in leisure though his face seems to be a bit serious. in the same room, there are the three sons of his. the eldest son is me who was standing there with a somewhat unfriendly feeling towards his father. the other two younger sons are with their friends(one or two of them), flocked around a table making excited sounds and playing with some new plaything they have got from somewhere.

reality: i am not as friendly to my father as to my mother.
reality: the two younger sons i saw in the dream are none other than the two sons of a yesudas look-alike in my neighbourhood whose face appears serious and formidable all the time. the person has long hair and beard exactly like yesudas and wears lungi and baniyan at home, and when he gets out, he wears white pants and white shirt tucked in, like yesudas. his figure and height match that of yesudas. if you happen to see him from a distance, you will surely take him for yesudas. he has two sons, who appeared in the dream, and a daughter.

poor fatima!

time: 21st century

woman: fatima (aged 34)

man: mansour al timani (aged 37)

background: the above couple had married 3 years ago fully legally (islamic and otherwise) and are parents of two kids.

current situation: a few months ago, the court passed a verdict divorcing them from each other and nullifying their wedlock even without informing them about it, based on a petition from the woman's half-brothers who say that her husband belonged to a different tribe. following this, the woman was taken to prison and still remains there as she is not allowed to meet or even communicate with her husband, since they are strangers now according to the islamic court eventhough the man and woman still consider themselves to be husband and wife. according to the court, the woman can leave the prison and go to her half-brothers if she wishes so, since they are her only surviving male guardians (mahrams). but she prefers to be in jail rather than be with them. the future of the grief-stricken couple and their children now lies at the mercy of the court.

i love small letters

i am in love with small letters. cute, arent they? i love a lot of things that are small, little, silly. maybe they belong to that group. capital letters hardly hold any appeal for me.

by the way, as far as i know, only english language (and of course the other european languages that make use of the english alphabet) follows the convention of using caps in places deemed grammatically appropriate. oh, i guess greek too make use of the caps convention. if anyone knows of any language/s that belong/s to the same group, do share your knowledge with me. it will be interesting to know.

i use only small letters wherever and as far as possible. even in this blog, i mostly use small letters. but at the beginning of sentences and some other places, there are caps which is because i type the post in ms-word first and then copy & paste to here; word has this autocorrection thing which corrects my english :p and i am too lazy to correct it back; let word have its share;)

but hereafter i will be preparing my posts in notepad, so that there is no need to worry about ms-word coming in my way. and with this post, i am starting my 'notepadding' :)
