couldn't make it work...

"She told me to pray every day, and whatever I asked for I would get it. But it warn't so. I tried it. Once I got a fish-line, but no hooks. It warn't any good to me without hooks. I tried for the hooks three or four times, but somehow I couldn't make it work."

digital fortress

such a brilliant work of fiction! this is what was felt by an ordinary reader like me when i finished reading it. i guess many others like me who don't have a deep understanding of cryptography or computers must have felt the same. the brilliance i attributed to the book is not without failing to see a handful of flaws in the design of the plot and the characters in it. but the clever insertions of a liberal supply of thrilling twists and the gripping narrative makes an ordinary reader overlook such faults. except one, that is. at least i couldn't overlook that specific defect. digital fortress is the name of a supposedly malicious algorithm. but the nsa who boasts of having the ultimate code-breaking machine, transltr that has an history of cracking the most complicated and advanced codes in a matter of minutes which would otherwise have taken years fails to break it. transltr couldn't decipher the code even after hours of working on it. the explanation is that digital fortress makes use of the so called technique of rotating cleartext, which simply means that by the time the transltr guesses the correct pass-key, the decrypted data will have mutated to something else. so, in effect, the transltr succeeds in finding the pass-key, however long and complicated it be, but still can't open the code as the pass-key becomes useless by that time. and yet, the entire story revolves around the desparate search challenged by unfavourable situations for a key that is supposed to decrypt the code, as transltr has failed to solve the problem. the question is that if such a code exists, then the transltr would have actually guessed it and opened the coded data long back within a matter of minutes. because transltr's job is to actually keep guessing all sorts of passkeys-- a trial and error method. as the transltr is made up of millions of processors, it will take only a few minutes to guess even the longest passkeys which ordinary computers may take years. and that is exactly how the transltr is relevant. according to the plot, even if one guesses the correct passkey, it will be of no use as the algorithm is built up with the rotating cleartext function. then what is the use of a quest for a passkey? and how can such a key exist for such an algorithm in the first place? a corollary is that who would want to make such an algorithm that cannot be opened. who would want to make an encryption that cannot be decrypted? the flaw is so serious that the entire story is based upon it. and therefore, if the flaw is recognised, the entire series of incidents that make up the story, and thus the story itself, will cease to exist. it is hard to think that dan brown did not notice this fault. an author who designs such a thrilling page-turner with countless twists and supenseful turns failing to notice it is an implausible thing. am i the only one who think about this fault? i browsed the amazon.com reviews made by readers and also googled for a while, but i couldn't find anyone talking about this specific shortcoming in the plot, not even the most ferocious criticizers. that made me suspect if i missed some point. isn't it a flaw at all? if anybody has a good explanation, please tell me. perhaps i missed something somewhere. perhaps it's not a flaw at all and it may have some logical explanation.

to my surprise, when i browsed people's reviews online, i found many talking about more defects in the book than i percieved. but those who have found them are people with a good knowledge of cryptography and computers and even about spain where a major portion of the story takes place. perhaps my ignorance in such subjects helped me appreciate and enjoy the book more than them. but anyway, the faults they mentioned belong to the kind i mentioned in the beginning which brown's sizzling narration can compensate for to a great extent. some people accused him of being a 'google-author', one who googles for information and incorporates it into his book, leading to factual errors and discrepancies, which clearly exhibits the author's lack of first-hand knowledge of things he deals with. i too indeed found in various portions of the book some descriptions that looked like cut-and-paste information. in his da vinci code, which is the first book of his that i read, it didn't bother me much. but in this book, which is the second book of brown that i read, when i came across the same style, i couldn't just ignore the repetition.

the greatest marvel in the book to me is the meaning of the raising of his hand by ensei tankado towards the people around him when he was dying of an apparent heart attack. the meaning is revealed only at the end. the twist is simply awesome!!

book: Oru desathinte katha
author: s. k. pottekkaat
publishers: sahithya pravarthaka cooperative society

this book is a collection of memoirs of sreedharan about his land athiraanippaadam. eventhough this is categorised as a novel, it is hard to consider it a novel. in a novel, the characters and events mentioned in a chapter are tied to those of other chapters by a strong thread. but such a thread is missing in this book. each chapter in this book is a separate event or a story which is independent of other events and characters and stay alone and detached. changes in a chapter don't affect other chapters in any significant manner. would anyone remove some random chapters from the book and pass it off as a complete book, a reader will never perceive the difference. that's why i hesitate to think of it as a novel. as i was nearing the last pages of the book with the sadness triggered by such ill feelings towards a famous book and a much acclaimed writer, two great chapters came running to my rescue. the two chapters immediately preceding the final one in the book. the poignant story of the german girl emma. those few pages that wet your eyes are a hundred times fabulous than the other parts of the book. they are enough to compensate for whatever negative aspects there are in all other pages of the book. i'm glad! all's well that ends well!

the bird-story...the end പക്ഷിക്കഥ...

(this is continued from the previous post)

may 15

after an interval of 2-3 days, today morning, i saw the blurred figure of the dove at the window through the rough tinted glass. i gave a sigh of relief.. so at last it has come again, now the egg will be hatched, i thought. but unfortunately, when i opened the window in the afternoon, what i saw was astonishing! the nest had disappeared, save a twig or two. the egg is still there. but the dove was nowhere to be seen. so, in the morning, had the bird come back just to dismantle the nest and carry it away? hmm, perhaps it is making a nest afresh somewhere else so that it can lay and hatch eggs peacefully without any nuisance from the nosy monster that i am! or was it some other bird who stumbled upon this abandoned nest in the middle of its search for some twigs and sticks to build a nest somewhere?

first it was an egg, then the bird too disappeared, now the nest itself has vanished!

may 16

today morning when i looked through the windowglass, i saw the blurred figure of the pigeon sitting there and flying away immediately. and then i opened the window and saw that the egg that was there yesterday has moved a bit towards the outer edge of the windowsill. some weird suspicion started popping up in my head. i closed the window. and after a while when i came back, my fear had turned into reality. what i suspected indeed happened! the egg had disappeared! this time i knew where it was. and later when i went downstairs i saw the fragments of the broken eggshell with yellow patches of the yolk in it lying there on the ground. the bird had pushed the egg down to the ground from the edge in order to destroy it. it seems it had come in the morning today just to finish this task. it didn't want to hatch it. i guess the hindi lesson at the school was true. but the bird will not hatch the eggs not only if you touch it, but even if you just go near it. that's what i have learned through all this. it's totally disappointing. so here i am with the guilt of murdering two lives!! the feeling is so self-degrading and makes me cringe!! the windowsill is empty now. even the last bit of twig that i saw yesterday morning has gone.

two birds and two eggs

may 10

i was climbing up the stairs. i almost stepped on it. a split second late and it would have been crushed under my foot. in the dimlight, i made a closer look. it was a bird. the one that we see everywhere. is it what we call a sparrow? it was silent, motionless. almost frozen. sitting there on one of the steps. so tiny. it was not grown up enough to fly. i guessed it had lost it way. it had gone astray from its flock. i couldn't find any other bird around. i picked it into my room. it appeared weak. i gave water. it didn't drink. i scattered some grains before it. it didn't peck at it. i wetted my finger and dropped water onto its beak. i split open its beaks and placed a grain in its mouth.

i thought i would open the window and place it there so that any bird from its flock would see and come to it and take care of it or it would manage somehow to reach the flock (i use to hear chirping of birds outside my room everyday). and i did so. but this time i couldn't find any bird outside the window.the little thing i placed on the windowsill didn't go away. instead it flitted back into my room. it could only flit here and there; it appeared not developed enough to fly far. then i thought that all birds might be at the other side and opened the other window in my room (for sometime now, i have been hearing sounds of bird(s) just outside this window at whose wall
rests the head-end of my bed). but opening the window gave me yet another surprise. there was a bird, a bigger one, resting on this window sill. it was a pigeon, and it flew off as i opened one of the panes. and in the place where it flew away from was a beautiful nest built artfully with little twigs and fibres. and what's more, it had two cute little eggs in it. so this was what was going on all these days right near my head. but i never used to open this window, and that's why i didn't see it earlier. i wanted to touch the eggs, but i didn't. i remembered a lesson learned in a hindi story at school. that if you touch the eggs, the mother bird would not hatch it anymore and it would drop it down to break it. however i am not sure if it is true. i didn't want to place the little bird at this window, as the pigeon would not like it and might attack it.

i wanted to make a picture of the motherbird hatching the eggs. but however long i waited it didn't return to the window. it just sat there at the roof of the next building observing the entire scene. it was waiting for the window to be closed. i thought there was no point in waiting anymore as the mother seemed too obstinate to come back and as a result the eggs might miss the warmth they were supposed to get. and i closed the window. i didn't know what to do with the little birdie. i didn't want to take it to the terrace and leave it there as the scorching heat would only kill the poor thing.

after some time i had to go out. before stepping out, i left the first window open enough for the birdie to fly through if it needed to. more than two hours later when i returned, the little creature had disappeared. i searched in every nook and corner of the room to see if it was hiding anywhere, careful with every step so that i might not step on it my mistake. i dragged the cot aside and looked underneath, looked inside the empty teacups, upturned the shoes, lifted the crumpled blanket that lay on the bed and shook it gently. it was nowhere to be seen. it had left. perhaps some birds from its flock came near the window and discovered it and showed it the way. good. so, one chapter was closed. before going to bed, i saw through the rough windowglass the blurred form of the pigeon hatching its eggs.

may 11

i got up in the morning and opened the window and saw the pigeon flying away from its eggs again. both eggs were there. i noticed that one of them had started to crack a bit. soon a red cute beak would pop up. i closed the window for the mother to come back again. after some time, i opened the window again and to my surprise, i saw that the egg that had started cracking had disappeared. where had it gone? i had seen the previous day the motherbird pushing and pulling the eggs with
its beak to gather them together in one place. perhaps today, while doing the same thing, the egg moved to the edge of the windowsill by mistake and fell down? if that is what had happened, then the egg might have fallen on the ground three storeys below and broken. i went downstairs to see, but there was not a trace of any egg or eggshell. so where was it? did the mother take the cracking egg to some other place to hatch it safelier? or did some rival bird came and snatched the egg from the mother? nothing was clear. anyway, right now there is only one egg and the bird. soon, we can expect it to crack open and a cute, tiny chick to pop out. hope this egg will not disappear in the same way.

the bliss of being...

let me drink from the cup of my life..
let me be...
let me sing my own song..
let me live my truth...
let me dance to the rhythm of my heartbeats..
and let me melt in the ocean of bliss-- the bliss.. of being...

two simple questions

try answering the below two simple questions. you have to answer them immediately. you can't take time to think, because the questions are so simple and silly.

question 1: Say "silk" five times. Now spell "silk." What do cows drink?

Answer: Cows drink water. If you said "milk", obviously you have lost it :)

question 2: It's twenty years ago, and a plane is flying at 20,000 feet over Germany(If you will recall, Germany at the time was politically divided into West Germany and East Germany.) Anyway, during the flight, TWO of the engines fail. The pilot, realizing that the last remaining engine is also failing, decides on a crash landing procedure. Unfortunately the engine fails before he has time and the plane fatally crashes smack in the middle of "no man's land" between East Germany and West Germany.Where would you bury the survivors? East Germany or West Germany or in "no man's land"?

Answer: You don't, of course, bury survivors. if you came up with some solution as to how to bury the survivors, obviously you have lost it :)

the above were two of a few questions i received in email. it is to test how alert you are. if you have got both answers right, you are simply a genius in terms of alertness! if you got any or both of them wrong, don't worry, 95% of the people(including myself;) ) got them wrong!
