Lolita

book title: Lolita
author: Vladimir Nabokov
isbn: 0-679-72729-9

I have read this book 2 or 3 times before. But that was a long time ago. And I was not knowledgeable enough then to understand the intricacies involved in it. But this time it was a complete read, not only because my reading style has developed over time, but also because of the exhaustive notes provided by Alfred appel, jr., without which a complete understanding of a book as this involving so much allusions, puns and parodies would be hard, if not impossible. The comical style of narration turns even the most gloomy situations in the novel hilarious.

I cannot forget the chapter in which humbert humbert goes to kill quilty. I felt real sympathy for quilty, who until then was the villainous, evil and ugly character of the story, thanks to the humorous style of handling the situation by the author.

I was eagerly waiting for the scene where humbert humbert goes to the residence of Lolita and shoots at her only to find that instead of bullets piercing her body they drip down one by one slowly as drops of water do from an improperly closed faucet. This picture has been there for years in my mind after reading the book long ago. But this time, I couldn’t find such a scene in the book. And this is not an abridged version. Was I careless at some points this time? Or was it just a dream influenced by the book and recorded in my memory after reading it earlier? Or was it a mistake in translation? (I read this book at least once in Malayalam translation). I don’t know.

VA, TX etc. are what a person from the usa tells me when asked about the place he/she lives in. But as a person outside the u.s., how could I know the expansions of all these abbreviations? He/she is responsible for the time I lose googling just to find out what he/she means. I’m sure he/she is never going to know that I’m from uttar Pradesh if I say I’m from u.p. u.p. is the abbreviation of uttar Pradesh which is a state in India, and all Indians are aware of it. One can use the abbreviation of the name of one’s state/ province while talking to people of other states of the same country, but not to those belonging to other countries.

Once I received an address from a bookcrosser who was a part of the same bookring as I in order for me to send her a
bookcrossing book. She hadn’t mentioned her country’s name. only her state was mentioned and that too in the abbreviated two-lettered form. I had to view her profile to confirm that the country was u.s. (only to confirm, since I knew most probably it should be u.s. since people from no other place have done a similar thing to me), without which I wouldn’t be able to figure out which country the book should go to. What did she mean? If the name of the country is not mentioned, it is u.s. by default? This isn’t a stray incident. If it were, this post wouldn’t have existed. I have had several similar experiences from u.s.-ians.

Perhaps they are not aware as to how a non us-ian feels about these things. Perhaps they are brought up in such a way as to overlook such things. Perhaps it is all so deeply blended into their culture that they are simply not aware of it. It may not be the fault of the individual. It could be what he/she acquires unconsciously from his/her surroundings.

Memoirs of a Geisha

book title: Memoirs of a geisha
author: Arthur Golden

Through this book, you get to have a deep insight into the now almost extinct geisha community of japan and some aspects of the japanese society. And the author’s effort that has gone into the research should be greatly appreciated. But apart from that, I couldn’t find the book much interesting as far as the plot is concerned. It’s a very commonplace book when it comes to the overall theme. What I feel is that it lacks the real qualities that can make it stand out as a creation of fiction among the numerous other works of fiction. But still, the book has earned great applause (especially in the west) which I think could be attributed to the exotic eastern elements in the book which could make it a really good read for a westerner. There are a lot of things in the book that a westerner might find interesting. it is not a very bad book anyway.

The Veiled Kingdom - Inside the Kingdom : My Life in Saudi Arabia

book title: The Veiled Kingdom : Inside the Kingdom - My Life in Saudi Arabia
author: Carmen bin Ladin

As far as the beauty of the book as a literary creation is concerned, one might say that it is not a well written book. it Looks like a report or a commentary. But this plain, blunt way of expression does help in preserving the air of truth and authenticity of the work to a great extent, which are essential ingredients that go into the making of a good autobiography.

Wherever she has made references to Islamic scriptures and shariah, she has been perfectly right, which shows that she has made good effort and had been very diligent like a researcher in understanding islam during her stay in Saudi Arabia.

being a person who is closely acquainted with the Saudi ways of life, I could absorb to a great depth what she has written, missing hardly any point. But one can never be sure if the entire account is an unbiased one. It is very clear from the book that she has been very furious towards the bin laden family. it seems that she is viewing the bin ladens and the Saudi society in general in a more negative way than she would have if she had never married a bin laden and gone to live in Saudi Arabia.

your children..

"Your children are not your children.

They are the sons and daughters of the desire for Life itself.

They come through you but not from you, and though they are with you, yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love but not your thoughts, for they have their own thoughts.

You may house their bodies, but not their souls; for their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.

You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you. For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday."

devi...rakhi...and this silly mood..

basheer’s devi has filled me with melancholy. It’s a couple of days ago that I read anuragathinte dinangal. But even now I’m immersed in that pensiveness, though it’s never clear what this sad craving of mine is for. Nevertheless, being absorbed by this deep gloom in my own lonely world, in my own secret little bubble, is tremendously sweet. And to add to this, rakhi, I received your sms b’day greeting early in the morning which woke me up from sleep. devi…! rakhi…! it’s quite long since we communicated with each other, even though your thoughts and nostalgic memories are my constant companion. you had greeted me on my last b'day. It seems as if you were simply waiting for three hundred and sixty five days to pass just to greet me happy birthday again. we had hardly talked during this interval of time, except perhaps once. Your message reminded me that it was my birthday. You simply flattered me. And you have pushed me further deeper into the well of gloom devi had already dumped me into!..

'cry' really made me cry!

today morning, in my office , i received a pamphlet of 'cry' ('child relief and you', which has now been changed to 'child rights and you') by mail . i opened the envelope and started reading it. the first page was the letter from the chief executive-- cry. i couldn't believe that only a few moments after i started reading it, my eyes were wet. i was at this portion of the piece:"Do you remember Dugi, the 13-year-old girl in Orissa, who survived alone in the forest, eating roots and fruit, and spending the nights up in the tree-tops, rather than be married against her will to a 55-year-old man who'd loaned money to her family? [at this point i was already beginning to feel a heaviness on my heart. i read further..] Or the Patna kids who skipped lunch and lined up silently for days on end till the State government took action to rescue their kidnapped school-mate?"At this point i realised that my eyes were filling with tears. but i tried to blink away the tears as people normally do in a similar situation when they are in the middle of people, and tried to read on. but with each additional word, i found it hard to fight back my tears that were brimming up, and i stopped reading immediately, lest my eyes would overflow and tears would fall out and those around me in the office would notice and wonder what the matter was. i put back the booklet into its envelope and sat silently trying to pretend nothing happened. i slowly wiped off a tear that almost came out of the corner of one of my eyes, trying to give others who might be noticing me the feeling that it was only some dust that had gone into my eyes.

i read the rest of the booklet after coming home from office. and even when i typed those words just now on this post, feelings were again bubbling up. i was really touched by the second incident. there is nothing new in people uniting for winning a cause, but there certainly is some difference between grown ups doing it and children doing it. grown ups unite and make associations and groups and stage strikes just in order to gain something. in 99% of the cases, it involves material benefits. but the children united to do without lunch for days, not to gain an advantage, but just to get their friend back. kids' heart can't be lured by money and world. they act out of pure, innocent love..

i request you to help children around you in whichever way you can to make their lives happy and secure.

ഇന്നു രാവിലെ, ഓഫീസില്‍ പോയപ്പോള്‍ എനിക്ക്‌ cry('child relief and you'; ഇപ്പോള്‍ 'child rights and you')യുടെ ഒരു പാംഫ്ലറ്റ്‌ തപാലില്‍ ലഭിച്ചു.

life...

"Life is always simple and complex, both. Simple as a dewdrop, and as complex also as a dewdrop, because the dewdrop can reflect the whole sky, and it contains all the oceans. come, get on the o.r. table, let's cut you open!

Does your love for something necessarily mean that you will love studying about it too? I don’t think so. Even though a technical person by profession, books and reading have always been among my greatest obsessions. I never wanted to be a person of science and technology. I’m an artist at heart. But by some irony of life, I didn’t study arts or literature or humanities. I went to the technical college. but deep down I have never been satisfied with what I’ve been doing all these years. I had always been sorry about the years spent in studying technology which could have been spent for studying humanities or literature. This was my agony. But to soothe my heart a little, I made an effort to study literature lately by registering myself for a correspondence course in m.a.in English literature offered by an open university, because I thought it would relieve me of my hang-up a bit. I have always believed that one should pursue one's studies and work in a field of something one loved deeply. And since I loved books, I thought I would find the study of books and authors interesting too. But I was mistaken. What I found when I read the text books of my course in literature was that authors and books were being performed surgery upon by various people. They call it criticism, analysis and all sorts of names. If this was what it meant by a course in literature, then I didn’t need it, and there is no point in grieving over the fact that I didn’t study literature earlier.

I saw authors and their books on the operating table, stripped of their clothes, parts of their bodies being dissected and taken to other similar tables to compare them with the corresponding parts of other authors and their creations, or their bodies being twisted and bent into all sorts of awkward, clumsy designs just to see if it looked better that way. If studying literature is this, then I’m simply not interested. I read just for the joy of reading. and i have my own ways of appreciating a book. criticism and analysis are acceptable to the extent that it helps you understand and appreciate the book better and give you a clarified picture, and not just for criticism's sake. In the name of criticism, people are just producing far fetched interpretations to writings, which even the author never meant in the first place. If you go on interpreting, you can make thousands of interpretations for the same book. If u enjoyed reading a book and have framed your own idea as to what it is, then move on, and don’t get entangled in the unnecessary confusion of the so-called criticism and analytical study.

when I read my textbooks of literature, I felt that they were trying to convey the idea that criticism is the ritual you have to perform at any cost if you are interested in books. For the good-for-nothing writers, the critics are a great help, because it is the various interpretations attributed to their works by the critics that enable them to answer the questions of their readers, because they are so hopeless that they themselves never know the meaning of the meaningless substance they write. At this point, one might ask me: “so what had you been thinking literature was if it was not the study and analysis of the written words and their authors?” Truly speaking, I didn’t know for sure. I was totally blinded by my love for the written word that there was not even a single moment when the thought arose in me as to what really the study of literature was. The only thought that was there is that if books made me happy, then studying them would definitely make me happy too, since anyway I would be surrounded by the one thing that I had great love for-- books. With any other course I did, I would have to find time to read books, whereas when the course is literature, I don’t have to do the same since my course itself would be all about reading them. But as i now know, that reading would not be for enjoying what you read, but to become a master of it by analyzing it using various techniques. This is another kind of science and technology. It has nothing to do with art, which makes me an unsuitable person to pursue it. Moreover, I will have to read the same book over and over again to get a clear picture of the intricacies involved if I really want to say that I was studying literature. I can read a book for the second time after a long time, but not immediately as it will diminish the beauty of the book.

where is bob???

friends,i had a great chuckle over this which i received from one of my yahoogroups. enjoy:

"George Bush goes to a primary school to give a speech. After his Talk, he offers question time. One little boy puts up his hand and George asks him what his name is.

"Bob".

"And what is your question, Bob?"

"I have 3 questions.

First, Why did the USA invade Iraq without the supportof the UN?

Second, Why are you President when Kerry got more votes?

And third, What happened to Osama Bin Laden?"

Just then the bell rings for recess. George Bush informs the kiddies that they will continue after recess.

When they resume George says, "OK, where were we? Oh that's right --- question time. Who has a question?"

A different little boy puts up his hand.

George points him out and asks him what his name is?

"Steve"

"And what is your question, Steve?"

"I have 5 questions.

First, Why did the USA invade Iraq without the support of the UN?

Second, Why are you President when Kerry got more votes?

Third, What happened to Osama Bin Laden?

Fourth, Why did the recess bell go 20 minutes early?!

And fifth, Where is "Bob" ??!!!!"

Many years ago, I had determined never ever to read complete works of any author. And I’ve kept my resolution until this moment. There was an occasion when I nearly broke it. I borrowed the complete works of Shakespeare from the library. But then (fortunately) I returned it without reading a single word.

I had made the decision not to read the complete works of an author or even a few books of the same author in a row, just because I had made that mistake once (or twice) and have been having to endure its undesirable outcome. I’m not out of the hang-up yet. I read vaikom Muhammad basheer’s complete works years ago. That was when I started taking reading seriously. And that time basheer was my most favourite. Nay, he was my only favourite. And I had read only a very few books by him all of which I loved very much. He became my role model, my hero. I even chose to talk about him and none else when it was my turn to talk on some topic for five minutes addressing the entire class during the period of ‘dcs’ or ‘development of communication skills’ (which was dubbed ‘development of communication kills’ by us students). But all the charm and fascination was lost after I read the two volumes of his complete works. It’s not that I regard him as a less important or a less great writer now. Not at all. He is still counted by me as well as numerous others as one of the greatest writers Malayalam literature has ever seen. But the fancy has died. One of the main reasons is that when you go on reading the various books that constitute the complete works, when you move from page to page, book to book, experiencing various themes, enjoying various plots, encountering the major protagonists, you see only one single hero spread all over, dominating all those words, all the pages and all those books and stories. Just one hero(or villain). his name is monotony. And you are struck by him. However much you love the author, you are bound to like him/her a little less just because of the fact that however much variety is there in his/her themes and designs, his/her style is not going to vary beyond certain limits. His/her style is his/her identity. This is true about almost all authors. One who has never read a bulky volume of complete works of any author may fail to get this point.

Kahlil gibran has also had the ill luck of being a subject of this cruelty of mine. How I used to love his words. But I set out on the adventure of reading all his books. And I read several works of his in a row. And I got bored for the same reason mentioned above. And I consciously put an end to the craze of reading all his books continually, lest I would be without even the little love for him that remained.

When you finish reading the complete works of any author, your fancy for the author fades away and you drift away from him/her. He/She becomes a stranger to you. the intensity with which you loved his/her works will grow feeble, because you would have nothing whatsoever to do with him/her anymore. He/she’s over and done with. He/she is out of your list. Once you have finished all his/her books, you start thinking about him/her less often. And you don't come across him/her in your pending or favourites list. He’s nowhere to be seen. you forget him/her. He/she simply disappears into thin air. He becomes to you that long lost classmate and friend u never saw (and most probably would never see again) since you moved to another city and hence another school faraway years ago. This is not the case with the others in your list, because you have to get back to them again and again. Even when you are interacting with only one of them, you cannot fully avoid the faces of others eagerly waiting for you. And one simply cannot avoid or forget them, because books unread are sweeter than those read. One can’t help cherishing them. After basheer, as I went on exploring more and more into the Malayalam literature, I found some others who became my favourites along with basheer—o.v. vijayan, m.mukundan, kakkanadan... They are still my favourites and my admiration for them increases day by day, just because I have not read all the books of any of them. I have yet to return to them many times more. It’s not yet time to forget them. I have to get back to them again. Once u have finished your school, and have joined college or university, you never keep going back to school everyday. But while you pursue your school studies, it is everything for you, because you have to spend some more time there in order to finish the course before you move to some other place. So you cannot afford to be out of touch.

When you finish reading all the literature created by an author, you become a scholar, a master of the books of that particular author. you can make great scholarly studies and prsesent great dissertations on him/her. you can participate in debates. But you lose that desire and yearning and love for him/her, that curiosity and that silly joy arising from the thought that something is still remaining to be explored, something is still waiting to unfold before you a world of secrets and wonders that you had never come across…

Postcrossing is indeed a fantastic idea! Send a picture postcard to someone anonymous at some faraway corner of the world and then receive one from yet another faraway corner from yet another anonymous person. I’m sure the founder of this site has drawn inspiration from bookcrossing, even though the principle is not exactly the same as bookcrossing. He himself is a member of bookcrossing. anyway it’s nice. I love it because I love the idea, and I love picture postcards too. I began loving them when I left my family for the first time and went to stay very far from my home to pursue my job. Even though I used to write to my friends around ten to twenty pages, I found it really hard to complete one single page when I wrote to my family, because I had nothing to tell them. At least nothing that they wanted to hear from me. I found myself groping for words. So in a way I was closed to my family whereas I was open to my friends. For before my friends there is nothing to hide. the Things very valuable to me are not the ones my family wants to hear about. And the things they count as very very important are not at all of any value to me. And gradually, I stopped writing to my family. I guess this is what people call ‘generation gap’. But I had always been feeling guilty, especially when they ask “why don’t you write?”. what should I write? I could have written pages and pages for my family to read, about all the things they would have loved to read, but all that would be just pretence. Not even a single word would be from my heart. Not a single word would be true. And I would be a liar in my own eyes. I never wanted that. And I found a solution , at least a partial one-- Send a picture postcard. Whenever u feel it’s pretty long since u wrote to ur family, just send one picture postcard. They are cheap too. And colourful pictures are loved by everyone. And a short message can be written on the other side. And You are relieved from the feeling of guilt, at least partially. And u don’t need to worry about the pain of filling at least one page with ur words, because a postcard gives you only a very little space for writing. You need to fill only so much space. And A beautiful picture will definitely alleviate the heaviness one feels on one’s heart when one receives your mail. Anyway, had there been no such thing called picture postcards, I would not have written anything at all to my family, which would have been utterly ugly. Still I know it’s not a complete solution for anything. But, something is better than nothing, I guess...
p.s: today, I’m relieved of the responsibilty of writing letters, thanks to the mobile phone revolution!!

how kaavya got foolish, got caught, and got disgraced

Kaavya viswanathan has been accused of plagiarism. Her book How Opal Mehta got kissed, got wild and got a life contains lines strikingly similar to those in another author’s book. I have mixed feelings for her. My points are these:

1. she shouldn’t have done it. I don’t support her action.
2. she didn’t necessarily need to apologize.
3. it was not accidental and unconscious as she tries to justify.

explanation:

1. why did she need to do it? Was the meager amount of happiness she might have got from doing it worth the disgrace? Had she not written those sentences in that manner, would her book have been any different from what it is now? I don’t think so. plagiarizing is a cheap act, whether one gains anything by it or not.

2. however, she apologized and told that it was not intentional, but rather unconscious. But since the language of English is not the private property of anyone, there was no need to apologize anyway. This is what I personally feel. It’s not a severe crime since she has not stolen the central idea of any book. If I write ‘I love you’ in a book and someone tells me that I don’t have the right to use the phrase because his/her book already contains the same thing, I would only think it’s a hilarious joke.

3. she told something which amounts to telling that she had read the other author’s work and the lines might have crept into her subconscious which made her internalize them unconsciously. But one who juxtaposes her stolen lines with the original lines finds this ‘unconscious’ claim hard to digest. Just a glimpse of the lines, and you will know.

blogging and me..

my reasons for blogging are varied :

1. blogging helps me come back to myself.

2. when i read other people's blogs spread all over the world of blogs and came to know how tightly the entire world has been gripped by the blogfever, i couldn't wait to take my plunge into this vast, tempting, charming ocean and dissolve in it.

3. it helps me evaluate how well i can write something and develop the way i use language.

4. it stops me from being a hypocrite and grants me freedom to be truthful (which is point 1 put in other words)

5. as anne frank says, "paper has more patience than people". yeah, people can't be patient enough to listen to all of my chatterings. here, the only difference is that paper has been replaced by silicon chips.

6. i can't wander carrying all the thoughts, feelings and memories that get accumulated inside me. they are a big burden. they have to be dumped somewhere. still, i need them. so what to do. just tranfer them to the blog, and i'm free, relaxed.. by telling anyone or anything whatever is there inside you at least once makes you light as a feather.

happy blogging myself!!
