The Canterbury tales

title: The Canterbury tales
author: Geoffrey Chaucer
translation into modern english: Nevill Coghill
published by: penguin books-1970

a boring read. according to a twenty first century reader like me, that is. yet there are enough reasons to read it. and that's why i read it. this is a book written around seven centuries back. it is the masterpiece of geoffrey chaucer who is sometimes called the father of english literature. the book has played a significant role in shaping up english literature.

this edition is a translation from middle english to modern english. it is in verse too.

the book is about a group of around thirty pilgrims on the way to st. thomas beckett's shrine at canterbury. to keep themselves amused and to get rid of boredom, they agree upon narrating stories to each other on the way. the group consists of individuals from all sorts of professions and all walks of life such as a student, a carpenter, a miller, a knight, a friar, nun, person of law... you name it. an inn-keeper who served the group at his inn before they set off on the pilgrimage sort of acts as the group leader. the stories are sprinkled with good measures of satire, comedy, lust, philosophy, piety etc.

the tales might appear to be utterly pointless and a waste of time for a reader like me who is only bothered about the impact a book makes on the reader at the time of reading, though they might have been devoured with great enthusiasm by the readers of the time it was written, i.e., seven hundred years back.
