an imam for america

Sheik Reda Shata, aged thirty eight and a father of four, had landed in brooklyn to serve as an imam of a mosque in the region. but circumstances made him something more than that. apart from his basic duty of leading prayers in the mosque, he was a mediator for disputes of family and business to many, and a matchmaker and marriage counsellor to many others. for the young and old generations alike, he was the only person to turn to for islamic solutions to their everyday troubles, as their relatives or families were far away in their homelands. and the task turned out to be immensely trying for the al azhar scholar in a diverse place like new york. it was not at all like his islamic egyptian village. initially he called his fellow al azhar-scholars back in egypt for assistance in solving the problems of the diverse muslim community of brooklyn, but their guidelines proved utterly useless for him in a place where chocolates contained alcohol and women jogged in sports bras in the street. when the jurisprudence of fourteen centuries of scholarship seemed insufficient at times to address the problems of islamic communities in the west, he had to make improvisations and frame a style of his own in finding solutions. that's how he became 'flexible', as he puts it. the fact that makes him different from traditional sheiks is that he uses a lot of common sense at each and every step. in no time, he became a twenty-four hour hot-line in all things islamic. the happiness and well-being of his congregants were among his prime concerns.

he is erudite, and yet funny. on one hand, he quotes liberally from voltaire, shaw and kant in his sermons, and on the other he never misses an opportunity for a hearty laugh. unlike the traditional sheiks, he knows how to enjoy a good joke. he says he is more like a doctor than a judge, for a judge sentences whereas a doctor suggests remedies. he had a satisfactory answer for anyone who came to him with a question. complaints about rebellious teenagers, marital strife, confessions of philandering, accusations of theft, rituals for newborns, whatever, he is all ears for your grievance and needs. he asked women to do away with their hijabs if they feel threatened. he also suggested there was nothing wrong in taking up a job of serving alcohol or pork if one could not find any other job. also oral sex was permissible within marriages according to him. "Islam is supposed to make a person's life easier, not harder," Mr. Shata explained. his verdicts made sense. the young generation who normally frowned at the word 'sheik' queued up at his place with their bundles of worries and confessions. to boys and girls alike, who were far from their parents and families, he was an elder brother. girls went to him with questions ranging from menstruation to infidelity. he had great love for all of them.

one of the things that gives him great joy is the opportunity to unite a girl and a boy looking for a suitable partner in wedlock. at times you see him playing the role of a chaperone accompanying some guy to a date, for islam says when two unmarried persons, a boy and a girl, meet up in hiding, satan sits in their middle as the third person. he wanted to help them get rid of that 'unislamic person'. he brings prospective couples to his office to provide a friendly and peaceful atmosphere where they could sit and have a good chit-chat and get to know each other deeper while he quietly sits at his desk browsing through news. he keeps a register of young boys and girls looking for a suitable life partner with all their relevant details as well as information about what they look for in a partner. he compares the profiles and suggests matches that had great chances of working out. and for interested 'candidates' he is always there to help with everything. one of his least favourite tasks is granting divorces.

though he turns furious at times with the nosy f.b.i. and other authorities who see any muslim as a potential terrorist, he says to the muslim youth groups not to wait for an invitation to embrace america, for he believes it is still the freest country in the world. at his home, when you see the 'allahu akbar' calligraphy on the wall of one of the rooms, in another there is 'i love new york'. even when he criticizes america and israel for their stand on palestine, he is not hesitant to make friends with jewish rabbis of new york.

mr. shata never wanted to be a sheik, because he believed that his qualities never matched those of a sheik. he thought that a religious person was very extreme and never smiled and was isolated from people. and he always loved to smile and laugh, and always took delight in being among people.

for all sheiks out there, there is some lesson in mr. shata's words:
"The surprise for me was that the qualities I thought would not make a good sheik — simplicity and humor and being close to people — those are the most important qualities. People love those who smile and laugh. They need someone who lives among them and knows their pain. I know them, like a brother."
whatever be your faith, could you afford not to love this man?
