an imam for america
Sheik Reda Shata, aged thirty eight and a father of four, had landed in brooklyn to serve as an imam of a mosque in the region. but circumstances made him something more than that. apart from his basic duty of leading prayers in the mosque, he was a mediator for disputes of family and business to many, and a matchmaker and marriage counsellor to many others. for the young and old generations alike, he was the only person to turn to for islamic solutions to their everyday troubles, as their relatives or families were far away in their homelands. and the task turned out to be immensely trying for the al azhar scholar in a diverse place like new york. it was not at all like his islamic egyptian village. initially he called his fellow al azhar-scholars back in egypt for assistance in solving the problems of the diverse muslim community of brooklyn, but their guidelines proved utterly useless for him in a place where chocolates contained alcohol and women jogged in sports bras in the street. when the jurisprudence of fourteen centuries of scholarship seemed insufficient at times to address the problems of islamic communities in the west, he had to make improvisations and frame a style of his own in finding solutions. that's how he became 'flexible', as he puts it. the fact that makes him different from traditional sheiks is that he uses a lot of common sense at each and every step. in no time, he became a twenty-four hour hot-line in all things islamic. the happiness and well-being of his congregants were among his prime concerns.
y laugh. unlike the traditional sheiks, he knows how to enjoy a good joke. he says he is more like a doctor than a judge, for a judge sentences whereas a doctor suggests remedies. he had a satisfactory answer for anyone who came to him with a question. complaints about rebellious teenagers, marital strife, confessions of philandering, accusations of theft, rituals for newborns, whatever, he is all ears for your grievance and needs. he asked women to do away with their hijabs if they feel threatened. he also suggested there was nothing wrong in taking up a job of serving alcohol or pork if one could not find any other job. also oral sex was permissible within marriages according to him. "Islam is supposed to make a person's life easier, not harder," Mr. Shata explained. his verdicts made sense. the young generation who normally frowned at the word 'sheik' queued up at his place with their bundles of worries and confessions. to boys and girls alike, who were far from their parents and families, he was an elder brother. girls went to him with questions ranging from menstruation to infidelity. he had great love for all of them. though he turns furious at times with the nosy f.b.i. and other authorities who see any muslim as a potential terrorist, he says to the muslim youth groups not to wait for an invitation to embrace america, for he believes it is still the freest country in the world. at his home, when you see the 'allahu akbar' calligraphy on the wall of one of the rooms, in another there is 'i love new york'. even when he criticizes america and israel for their stand on palestine, he is not hesitant to make friends with jewish rabbis of new york.
mr. shata never wanted to be a sheik, because he believed that his qualities never matched those of a sheik. he thought that a religious person was very extreme and never smiled and was isolated from people. and he always loved to smile and laugh, and always took delight in being among people.
for all sheiks out there, there is some lesson in mr. shata's words:
"The surprise for me was that the qualities I thought would not make a good sheik — simplicity and humor and being close to people — those are the most important qualities. People love those who smile and laugh. They need someone who lives among them and knows their pain. I know them, like a brother."whatever be your faith, could you afford not to love this man?
a three part feature series about mr. shata written by Andrea Elliott in The new york times in 2006-march has won pulitzer prize now. to read it all, click the following links:

The Canterbury tales
a boring read. according to a twenty first century reader like me, that is. yet there are enough reasons to read it. and that's why i read it. this is a book written around seven centuries back. it is the masterpiece of geoffrey chaucer who is sometimes called the father of english literature. the book has played a significant role in shaping up english literature.
this edition is a translation from middle english to modern english. it is in verse too.
the book is about a group of around thirty pilgrims on the way to st. thomas beckett's shrine at canterbury. to keep themselves amused and to get rid of boredom, they agree upon narrating stories to each other on the way. the group consists of individuals from all sorts of professions and all walks of life such as a student, a carpenter, a miller, a knight, a friar, nun, person of law... you name it. an inn-keeper who served the group at his inn before they set off on the pilgrimage sort of acts as the group leader. the stories are sprinkled with good measures of satire, comedy, lust, philosophy, piety etc.
the tales might appear to be utterly pointless and a waste of time for a reader like me who is only bothered about the impact a book makes on the reader at the time of reading, though they might have been devoured with great enthusiasm by the readers of the time it was written, i.e., seven hundred years back.

i was reciting this in one of the kerala chat-rooms on paltalk among a few sher-o-shayri loving friends of mine. a pakistani guest was also present with us. unlike many pakistanis who go to indian rooms and vice versa just to abuse their 'enemies', this person was soft-spoken and modest. he stayed there just because he was delighted to see a little group who had hardly anything to do with urdu, or even hindi for that matter, interetsed in urdu poetry and ghazals. no sooner was the rubayee over than he made this comment: "please don't drag in religion here." he sounded as if his religious sentiments were hurt by the rubayee. but i didn't get the slightest inkling as to how on earth could it have hurt him, as i believed that those lines had nothing to do with any religion whatsoever, neither against nor in favour. and i told him so. then i muttered the same lines to myself once again slowly, pausing at every word just to find out what it was that provoked him. and to my astonishment i came to a halt at the word 'madrasa' in the last line. yeah, that was the mischievous word that created all the misunderstanding. now i knew why he was hurt. in the pakistani and indian contexts, madrasa means a religious institute where islamic lessons are taught. and to replace madrasa where the knowledge about god is imparted with a tavern and alcohol which are 'haram' would be sheer blasphemy in the eyes of a pious muslim. but that is only one way of understanding the word. it is not the exact word meaning. and the word is not an urdu/hindi one. it is basically arabic/persian. one can see that its roots are the consonants d, r and s from which spring out many other related words as well. for example:
dars=lesson
and, madrasa=a place where one learns/studies something (i.e., a school)
in an arab country, say, saudi arabia, madrasa is the word for school where students go to study, as in any part of the world, science, social sciences, maths and languages. of course, religion is a subject too because they don't need separate schools for that as all citizens are muslims. but in a country like india where a lot of religions coexist, there are practical difficulties in teaching religions in school. as a result, various religions have their separate classes run by their respective communities, which students attend out of their regular school hours. and to distinguish from the regular school, muslims call their religious schools madrasas. the main reason is that in the arab world, in olden times, knowledge simply meant the knowledge of god and religion. and therefore centres of knowledge, i.e., madrasas were meant to impart only such knowledge. so there is enough reason for a person in the indian subcontinent or elsewhere to (mis)understand that madrasas are centres of religious learning. a close analogy would be the word 'vedas'. eventhough the word 'veda' simply means 'knowledge', it would remind an indian about god and mysticism, since in ancient india, knowledge was chiefly the knowledge of such things as god and cosmos.
now, back to the rubayee. the poet says that it was a mistake to remain sober and conscious. because in the state of drunkenness he found his lost life - the one that was spoilt by school. to have a proper appreciation of the quatrain, one has to look a bit deeper beyond the words, because, like in any great poetry, the meaning is not on the visible surface, but in a plane beneath it. here, words school(madrasa) and tavern or liquor bar don't mean what they mean in the dictionary. school is the symbol for all knowledge and thought, all that have to do with intelligence, all that is not an inherent part of ourselves, all that is acquired, all that is not original, but pseudo. and tavern or liquor-bar that represnts a drunken state stands for all emotions and feelings, all that has to do with heart and not brain, all that is inherent in us, all that is true and pure, all sentiments tied to the language of the heart. when we learn the newton's laws of motion, we actually learn, using our intelligence, something that someone else has originally discovered. that is the language of the brain. but when one lives and experinces something oneself first-hand, it is one's heart, one's truth, that is involved. in short, the quatrain means that whatever knowledge you earn from the external world is false, and the experiences and feelings you live are your only truth, because they are a part of you, and severing them makes you incomplete.
which could be roughly translated as:

Update(on 3.8.2007)-- the meaning of rubayee
I have been noticing for a long time that many visitors land on this page from google as a result of a search for the meaning of rubayee. No other google-search has brought so many visitors to my blog as this. The search-strings are normally meaning rubayee, rubayee means, rubayee meaning etc. or something very close to these. But I'm sure those visitors are always disappointed because there is no meaning of the word rubayee in this post, though the word itself appears. So I thought of adding this update here thinking that it would be a little help to those searchers.
The word Rubayee in Persian, Arabic, urdu etc. languages means that which has four. In poetry, it means a four-line verse, what we technically call a quatrain. This form of poetry is very popular in Persian, Arabic and urdu literature. And omarkhayyam, who lived in neishabur, Persia(now iran) around a millennium ago, is perhaps the most renowned rubayee-poet. He is most famous for his collection of rubayees, the rubaiyat, which has been made popular by Edward fitzgerald's English translation, The rubaiyat of omar khayyam.
Now a bit of etymology: rubayee word has originated from the Arabic word arbaaa which means 'four' and has taken form from the three root consonants r, b and a (remember, the letter 'a' can also appear as a consonant in Arabic etc. which can take various forms such as i, e, u, etc. as well).
So,
arbaaa = four
Rabiaa = fourth
Rubaee = containing four
Rubaiyat = a collection of rubaees (or simply, the plural form of the word rubaee)(note: the letters 'at' at the end should sound as the 'ath' in the word path)
(note: the bold letters are consonants which include the letters a, e and i, and others are vowels)
This word rubaee, when spoken by non- Arabic, non-Persian etc. speakers, is pronounced as rubayee, and hence written thus in English.
I'm glad if this helped you in your search for the meaning of rubayee.

i happened to hear about c. radhakrsihnan for the first time only when munpe parakkunna pakshikal won the vayalar award. but it's only now that i got an opportunity to read this book. anyone who loves to see peace and tranquillity established in the world always will love this splendid book. the author has succeeded in the proper design of the plot and the expression of ideas. but any reader could see that it is not for the plot but for the glow of ideas that the award has been given. the major points of the core idea are expressed in the form of conversations between the characters. and it's fabulous! the book makes an attempt to find out answers to various questions pertaining to the pros and cons of the philosophy of armed revolution, and in the process ushers the reader into a realm of serious thought. for a good-hearted reader, reading this book will not be a waste of time.

the satanic verses
title: The satanic verses
author: salman rushdie
like most of rushdie's novels, this also needs to be read at least twice for a proper appreciation. this has all the characteristics typical to a rushdian novel, but in a bit more complicated way.
in this book, chronology loses all its significance. the story switches back and forth between the early days of islam and today. some personalities of the era of jahilia appears in the scenes of today and vice versa. people, places and time, all get mixed up. apart from the islamic stuff, the book contains too many allusions and puns that a great deal of general knowledge is required to get a good grasp of them all. an indian muslim can enjoy the book very well as a considerable portion of the book deals with islamic history and the indian culture. but ironically, it was the muslims who enjoyed it the least as criticism of islam is not easily accepted by muslims unlike other religious communities. the chapters that depict the jahiliya arabia and the early days of islam are real masterpieces of fiction. british and arabian cultures are also represented in this book.
i have a request to rushdie, and it is this: please condense and cut short your books into half their sizes. that way, they could be many more times enjoyable. because one thing i have experienced with rushdie's books is that the first quarter of the book is incredibly interesting and one gets totally immersed in it and the pages get flipped over at a tremendous pace. the second quarter is not as good, but not boring either. after this first half, the problem begins. the book becomes a dragging read because the reader has imbibed enough of rushdie from the first half. and he/she knows that nothing different from the first half is awaiting him/her in the second half, because rushdie's books never have a well formed structure as he is not a writer who believes in the overall structure of the plot. his plots always look haphazard. with other authors' books, even if the second half appears to be boring, the reader reads on with the expectation that there would be some new turn in the story etc. and there's the curiosity to know how it all ends. but with rushdie, there is no expecting anything about the pages to come. his books are a page-to-page entertainment. with his works, the enjoyment is in the reading itself and not with the story or how it ends. he plays with words and ideas in remarkably amusing ways. as sasi tarur has told, he is the greatest prose-stylist of our times. it's true. and that's what an admirer of rushdie always looks for in his books. and if a person can't take interest in such word and idea games, he has nothing to do with rushdian literature. anything implausible and utterly inconsistent with reality can happen in his stories. and that's his style. in this book too, the entire design is that of a fable that moves through a series of mythical and imaginary incidents and characters. one who looks for consistency gets utterly lost in various calculations and assumptions when the author portrays sisodia as a stammering person or rekha merchant as floating in the air sitting on a carpet reminding one of the stories of the arabian nights. he/she thinks that it is all symbolic. but there is hardly any symbolism in rushdie's works. it's all inconsistent with reality, but still they have no hidden inner meanings. they are all just a part of his playful literature. there is no need to search for what the 'symbols' represent.

ten people, lured into a house on a lonely, rocky island by someone by fraudulent invitations, are to be killed one by one for crimes they had committed in their past, which were not reckoned crimes in the eyes of law and thus were left unpunished. their host was nowhere to be seen. deaths happen one by one. after three mysterious deaths, they conclude that the perpetrator was one among them, since all transportation and communication was cut off from the island. but who was it? that was the puzzle. they start supecting each other strongly. the only people who were beyond any suspicion were unfortunately the ones who were already dead..
a nice read indeed!
this was my second read of the book. i had read this thrilling book years ago as a malayalam translation. and this was the first time i read anything by agatha christie in the original. the initial pages reminded me of The five people you meet in heaven by Mitch Albom in which the protagonists are responsible for the death of someone or other indirectly, without even being aware of it the entire life. also, memories of a couple of movies came to mind. one is The flatliners in which Julia Roberts enacts a main character. it's about a group of medical students, four or five of them, performing experiments with their own bodies. they stop their heartbeats using a cardiac defibrillator for a few seconds, during which all the activities in the body stop completely and only the brain remains active -- active in a very sharp way. it brings back some flashes of long forgotten memories of the childhood or teens. it shows them vivid pictures and scenes from their past and helps them rediscover some crime they had committed as a child or some unpleasant incident they had experienced in their past, the significance or seriousness of which was incomprehensible for their innocent and immature minds back then. another movie was a hindi remake of the agatha christie's book itself. the name was, i guess, Anjaan or Benaam. but i don't remember if it was an exact remake or one with some modifications suitable for the indian cinema. i remember there were songs in it, an inevitability in a bollywood masala.

strike: ksa no exception സൗദിയിലും സമരം
perhaps the first of its kind, a strike has been staged by a group of more than 800 bangladeshis against the injustice of their employers. their company had deprived them of their salaries for the past two months and the overtime wages of three months, apart from several other negligences. the company management had to order the repayment of the delayed salary of the labourers immediately following the intervention of the saudi security patrol.
that said, strikes and demonstrations have a negative side too. when people see that a strike has turned out successful, they will resort to more strikes, bandhs and hartals for even silly reasons which can cause many an undesirable consequence. ask a keralite to know what a strike means.
the prophet has told that a labourer's wages has to be provided way before his sweat gets dried up. nevertheless there are countless companies in the kingdom of saudi arabia that deprive their workers of their salary for months- sometimes even up to as much as 6 months or even a year.
recently the saudi labour ministry has formulated new rules to tackle such problems which are expected to come into force soon.

a train of the poor പാവങ്ങളുടെ തീവണ്ടി
i ran into this unique voice that stood out from the cacophony of the recent samjhouta incident. a touching article in The Indian Express by Sagarika Ghose dealing with some different aspects of the trip that is supposed to bridge gaps. i loved the article so much that i didn't want to finish off the post by just placing a link to it. instead i copied the entire thing and pasted it here:
"A train of the poor:
The Samjhauta Express carries so many small and precious possibilities on board. After the investigations into the blasts are over, we need to ask why officialdom on both sides treats them with such suspicion and disregard
On a freezing January night three years ago two Indian Express journalists queued up to board the train to Pakistan. The Attari-Samjhauta Express stood at the Old Delhi railway station decorated with buntings, gold and silver paper stars and rose and marigold garlands. The train had been suspended in 2002 after the attack on the Indian Parliament, but now after a gap of two years, once again the humble little friendship express was all set to trundle between families torn apart by AK-47s, wire borders and massed troops.
On January 15 2004, the journalists had expected a sentimental flower-laden journey across the train’s inaugural run across the border. Instead we found ourselves on a gruelling trip aboard an inconvenient train, with customs officers and policemen harassing passengers at every turn. The mood on board was anything but syrupy and sentimental. Instead it was robustly impatient with the whims of politicians.
The Samjhauta Express or the Attari Express leaves Old Delhi railway station at 10 pm. It then travels to Attari, where the Attari Express changes formally into the Samjhauta Express. Three years ago this train too like the Indian one that comes to Attari was decorated with flowers, balloons and buntings. Ceremonially dressed BSF horsemen escorted the train to the border.
Who are the passengers aboard the Samjhauta Express? The Samjhauta Express is a train of the poor. It is a train of those who cannot afford to take the flight. And it is a train of those who journey to the Pakistan High Commission in Delhi from small towns in UP and Rajasthan to camp in the capital for months, sleeping in Nehru Park or ISBT in the sometimes hopeless wait for a visa.
The Samjhauta Express has few windows and on January nights a freezing wind rushes through the compartments as the passengers huddle under blankets. A great source of warmth is the smoke of Bidi No. 30. Every traveller is laden with gifts. Coconuts, elaichis, pressure cookers (much cheaper in India than in Pakistan), paan and cashew. One mother whose daughter is married in Pakistan said her daughter misses idlis, dosas and chow mein. In a tiffin packed tightly under plastic she proudly said she was taking uttapam and hakka noodles to Hyderabad.
There was a millworker from Bhilwara, a shawl merchant from Kashmir, jewellery shop owners from Indore. There was a graduate of the Aligarh Muslim University whose parents live on both sides of the border and who told us that every time he visits Pakistan, “agency-wallahs” (the ISI) try to recruit him. There was a Bollywood aspirant who loved India, there was a clerk from Palanpur and for us, the highlight of the trip, there was little Areeba with the face of an angel who darted between her parents legs peering out with a truly devilish grin.
Rishtedaari was the obsessive topic of conversation aboard the Samjhauta Express. The shawl merchant from Kashmir was on his way to visit his father’s grave. The Bollywood aspirant had come to India to catch a glimpse of Bombay, a city she said she loved more than her own parents. The millworker from Bhilwara and his wife had no children. They had saved money for three months to visit their nieces in Pakistan.
At almost every station in the journey, the travellers were poked and prodded by policemen. Constables jabbed at their bags, pulled down their beddings and opened up their suitcases. A packet of shami kababs was torn open. A tin of almonds sent skittering to the floor. After yesterday’s blasts, as the experts debate on the lack of intelligence on terrorism, maybe they should devote some attention to how brutally innocent passengers are treated by the police, how the stigma of “terrorist” seems to sit on every one of them just because they happen to be poor Muslims. A little less prejudice and a little more intelligence would perhaps stand the police in better stead when dealing with the passengers of the Samjhauta Express.
The customs and immigration formalities on the train are ghastly. Or at least they were three years ago. A six hour interminable wait takes place at Attari after the train pulls in there at 4 am. Officials are rude, rough and late. There was not a single seat at Attari station and passengers had to wait for hours until the first immigration officer turned up in the morning. Kafka-esque dramas followed after that, with parrot salesmen and peanut-traders being asked questions about the South Asian Free Trade Agreement and the ban on trade at the border.
“Why are you bringing parrots?” screamed an immigration officer. “To sell sir,” said the trader from Jaipur. “It’s illegal!” barked the officer. “No, no I want to sell parrots,” insisted the salesman. “You are a criminal!” shouted the officer. “But my family is in the parrot business for years,” insisted the salesman.
Many of the passengers simply do not know how to fill forms. Many don’t have passports because they believe that the passport of one family member is enough to see them through. The chaotic clash between illiterate rural folk and prejudiced brutal officialdom is perhaps similar to what would happen if international checkpoints were set up at Delhi’s Inter State Bus Terminus.
The story of harassment and delay is the same at Wagah. Here, the Pakistani customs and immigration officials are equally dilatory. The queues are endless, many go to sleep, there is the same all-round loud bewilderment at the triplicate forms. In the process many miss their connecting trains.
All high-sounding Confidence Building Measures and Composite Dialogue Process and Track II diplomacy seem like elite luxuries, mere diplomatic piffle compared to the gritty traumas on the Samjhauta Express. If the Indo-Pak dialogue wants to make a difference to ordinary lives, then perhaps the sharp-suited ambassadors and foreign secretaries might try to improve the quality of travel on this so-called showpiece of a train.
The last word of our journey thus belonged to Syed Yakoob, a tele-marketing operator: “All those rich people who go to seminars and talks on India-Pakistan peace, why don’t they actually travel by the Samjhauta Express to see what India-Pakistan peace is really about?”
